whatisnotedinthissection,allotherPC3Kfunctionsoperatenormallywhile
inGMmode.In
GMmode,thePC3KcompliesspecificallywiththeGeneralMIDI(GM1)specification.

GeneralMIDIisaspecificationcreatedbytheMIDIManufacturersAssociationwhichdefines
specificfeaturesthataMIDIinstrumentmusthave(seetheMMAwebsiteatwww.midi.orgfor
moreinformation.)Among
otherthings,theGMspecificationsetsastandardbank ofprogram
namesandnumbers,aswellasastandarddrummappinglayout,sothatsequencescreatedon
anyGMinstrumentwillplaybackwiththecorrectinstrumentationonanyotherGM
instrument,nomatterthemanufacturer.GMhasmanyuses,for
exampleitmakesiteasyfor
musicianswhouseMIDIfilestoshareideasandcollaboratewhileusingdifferentsetsof
equipment.Alsomanyinstrumentalversionsofpublic domainsongscanbefoundforfreeon
theinternetasGMcompatibleMIDIfiles.These,likeallMIDIfiles,offercertainadvantages
over
audiosuchassmallfilesize,theabilitytoedit,orchestrate,orchangetempotoeasilylearnfrom
thesequences,orevenconvertnoteinformationtostandardnotationwithathirdparty
application.

Onceenabled,Programmodewilldisplaythesetof128standardGM
programnamesonthe
rightsideofthescreen(seebelow.)Asidefromthedifferentlayoutandprogramchoice,Program
modeoperatesnormally(seebelowforinfoontheleftsideofthescreen.)AdefaultGMsequencewill
beloadedwhichsetsFXsendsforreverbandchorus,which
arepartoftheGMspecification.
DrumprogramswillalsoberemappedtotheGMdrummap.ThestandardPC3Kprogramswill
notbevisibleuntilGMmodeisturnedoff.
