5. Connecting USB devices
TheKRONOSsupportshighspeedUSB2.0for
connectingtostoragedevices,suchasharddrives,
flashmedia,andCDR/RWdrives,aswellasclass
compliantUSBMIDIcontrollers.
USB storage devices
Youcansaveandloadsamples,sounds,sequences,
andotherdatatoandfromUSB2.0storagedevicesfor
backup,transferringtocomputers,etc.
NotethatHDRtracksmustbeplayedfromand
recordedontotheinternaldisk.Youcanbackthemup
toUSBdevices,however.
Themaximumsupportedcapacitydependsuponthe
formatoftheUS
Bdevice.WithFAT16format,the
maximumcapacityis4GB;withFAT32,themaximum
is2Terabytes(2,000GB).
1. UseaUSBcabletoconnectyourUSBstorage
devicetooneoftheKRONOS’sUSBAports.

Note:Ifthedeviceyouareusingdoesnotsupporthot

USB MIDI controllers
YoucanconnectclasscompliantUSBMIDIcontrollers
directlytotheKRONOS,andusethemjustasyou
wouldcontrollersconnectedtothe5pinMIDIjacks.

controllertooneoftheKRONOS’s USBAports.
IfthecontrollerissettoadifferentMIDIchannelthan
theKRO

OS’sGlobalMIDIChannel,youcanuseitto
playadifferentsoundthanthelocalkeyboardin
CombinationsorSongs,ascontrolledbytheTimbreor
TrackMIDIsettings.
YoucanalsoplaythechordpadsusingKorgUSB
MIDIcontrollersequippedwithdrumpa
ds,including:
•nanoPADandnanoPAD2
•microKONTROL

Whenthesecontrollersareconnected,theKRONOS
willautomaticallydeterminetheMIDIassignmentsof
thecontroller’spads18,andmapthemdirectlytothe
KRONOSpads.

Hot-plugging
TheKRONOSsupportsUSBhotplugging.Thismeans
thatyoucanconnectordisconnecttheUSBcablewhile
thepowerison.
Note:Inordertousehotplugging,theUSBdeviceyou
areconnectingmustalsosupporthotplugging.

KRONOShastwoseparateUSB2.0ports,andcan
supportupto8USBdevicessimultaneously.Notethat
itdoesn’tmatterhowthedevicesareconnected;evenif
youusehubsordifferentports,themaximumis
always8devices.
USB Power
SomeUSBdevicesgettheirpowerfromtheUSB
connection.Thesearecalled“buspowered”devices,
andtheyaresupportedbytheKRONOS.
OtherUSBdevicesmayrequireaseparatepower
source,inadditiontotheUSBconnection;inthiscase,
you’llneedtouseanappropriatepoweradaptorfor
thedevice.
Thereisalimitationtothetot
alcurrentsuppliedtoall
connectedUSBdevices,asdefinedbytheUSB
specification.Ifthetotalcurrentconsumptionofthe
connecteddevicesexceedsthislimit,theKRONOS
maynotcorrectlyrecognizetheconnectedUSB
devices.Ifthishappens,anerrormessageof“USBHub
Po
w
erExceeded!”willappear.
Toavoidthisproblem,ifyouconnectmorethanone
USBdevice,pleaseuseaselfpoweredUSBhubinself
poweredmode.Fordetailsonconnectionsandsettings

Thekeyboard,controllers,andsequenceretc.ofthe
KRONOScanbeusedtocontrolanexternalMIDItone
generator.Conversely,anotherMIDIkeyboardor
sequencercancontrolthetonegeneratorofKRONOS
toproducesound.
•UseMIDIcablestoconnecttheMIDIconnectorsof
KRONOSwiththeMIDIconnectorsofyour
externalde
vice.
