} What does 3-in-1, or a microwave appliance with grill and convection heating mean?
A 3-in-1 microwave appliance is a microwave combined with a grill and convection heating.
It has 3 functions – an appliance which is also referred to as a combi microwave appliance or
combi microwave. Depending on the type of appliance, the heating systems can be operated
individually (stand-alone), in succession, or at the same time (combi operation). This allows
food to cook quickly and become crisply brown at the same time. The temperature and
microwave settings can either be manually selected or installed as a pre-programmed
setting. The user guide will provide you with all the information you need about your
appliance and how to use it.
} What does convection mean?
The term “convection” refers to the way in which hot air is evenly distributed inside the
cooking appliance by means of a ventilator. The heat generated from one or more heating
elements is evenly convected around the food and cooks it on all sides. Convection is
particularly useful for making food crispy and for achieving baking results as per the
traditional oven method. Generally speaking, temperatures range from 150 to 240 °C. Food
to be baked or roasted can generally be cooked on the bottom rack. The swivel plate rotates
to allow more evenness when browning.
} What happens during grilling?
When grilling, the heat from the heating elements at the top of the appliance browns the
surface of the food. With convection grills, the ventilator increases the rate of heat transfer.
The grill intensity can be regulated by placing the food on a low or high rack.
The swivel plate absorbs any dripping juices and helps to achieve even browning when
grilling.
} What does combination cooking, combi-cooking, combi appliance or combi mean?
Combination cooking means combining the use of convection heating, grilling and
microwaving. The following four combi settings are often programmed:
Combi 1 - Convection + microwave
Combi 2 - Grill + microwave
Combi 3 - Grill + Convection (convection grilling)
Combi 4 - Convection + grill + microwave
Convection allows browning on all sides by use of temperature control, the grill achieves
intensive browning on the food’s surface, and if the microwave is turned on, the food will
be cooked in a third of the time. Combi cooking is ideal for fast cooking and evenly browning
meat and poultry. It is also suitable for gratinating and cooking soués and gratins at the
same time. Whilst the microwave is cooking the food, the convection or grill function browns
the food to make it crispy.
