next film is be ing developed.
NOTE : Eight or ten 4 x 5 negatives can be developed , one after the other,
in o ne portion o of the developer ; then it sho uld be t hrown awa y and a fresh
pon ion mixed.
Only one ne gative should be developed at a tim e until the ,?per ato r b eco mes
expert, then he can manage three or four in the tray at one time and the
deve loper will answer for twenty-four 4 x 5 films before being exhausted.
As each successive negative is developed it should be put , with the pre·
cedi ng n egatives , in the wash i ng tray and the water changed t wice to prevent
the developer remaining in the films fr om stai ning them.
X. Put two ta ble s poonful s of Hypos ulphit e of Soda into th e
fourth tr ay , fill two-thirds full of wat er , and stir until dis-
solved .
Thi s is called the fixing bath.
X I. Immers e th e n ega ti ves one by one in the fixing bath
unti l they are entirely clear of white s pot s and are tr anspa rent
inst ead of milky by tr ansm itt ed lig ht. This will require about
10 minutes.

III. Pour o ff th e fixing solution into the slop bucket, and
fill the tr ay with clear, cold water; rep eat this at intervals of
five
minutes, five or six timp.s, keepin g the neg atives in motion,
or tr ansf err ing them back and forth to tra y NO.3, one by one,
to
ensure the water acting even ly upon th em.
The fixing solution mu st only be used in tra y NO.4, and
the negatives, after fixing, must not be put in either No.1 or
No. 2 tr ays. Neither must any of the fixi ng so lution be
allo we d to touch th e films, throu gh the agency of th e fi n ge Ors, or
otherwise, until they are ready to go into th e fixing bath,
otherwise, they will be s pott ed or blackened, so as to be
useless.
X IV.
When the negatives are thorou gh ly was hed , put
on e-ha lf ounce of glyce rine into one pint of water (four por-
tions
mea s ur ed with the deve l ope r g lass), stir well and soak
the n egat i ves in the solution for 5 minutes, then r em ove them
a nd wipe off the su rplu s moisture with a ' soft damp cloth,
and
pin them by th e four corners, face up, to a flat surface to
dry.
