AiR FILTER REAR TJNE SHIELD Theair filter isa deviceon the engineair intakethat preventsdust and dirt enteringthe engine.See Figure5. The rear fine shieldprotectsthe operatorfromflying debriswhilealso smoothingoutfreshlytilled soil.See Figure5. MUFFLER SIDE SHIELD Engineexhaustexitsthe enginevia the muffler.See Figure5. The side shieldis usedto maintaincleareven rowsand may be adjustedto one of five differentpositions.See Figure5.

Withthe tiller balanced,pushsidewayson the handlebarto steer in the directionof the turn.After turning,slowlylowerthetines into 3.

Fasterenginespeedsmay be desirable whenmakingfinalpassesthroughthe seedbedor whencultivating.
Terrace Gardening 1. Tocreatea terrace,start at thetop of the slopeand work down Go back and forth acrossthe first row.See Figure16. 2. Eachsucceedinglowerterraceis startedby walkingbelowthe terraceyouare preparing.Foradded stabilityof thetiller, always keepthe uphillwheelin the soft, newlytilled soil. Donot till the last 12"or moreof thedownhilloutside edgeof each terrace.This untilledstrip helps preventtheterracesfrom breakingapart and washingdownhill.It also providesa walkingpathbetweenthe rows.
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE Followthe maintenanceschedulegivenbelow.This chart describes serviceguidelinesonly. Usethe ServiceLog columnto keeptrackof completedmaintenancetasks.To locate the nearest Sears Service Centeror to scheduleservice,simplycontactSears at 1-800-4-MY-HOME®. Beforeperforminganytypeof maintenance/service, disengageall controlsand stoptheengine.Waituntilall movingpartshavecometo a completestop.Disconnectsparkplugwireandgrounditagainstthe enginetopreventunintendedstarting.
1. 2. Removethespark plug bootand use a sparkplug wrenchto removethe plug.See Figure17. Visuallyinspectthe spark plug.Discardthe spark plug if thereis apparentwear,or if the insulatoris crackedor chipped.Cleanthe sparkplug with a wirebrush if it is to be reused. 3. Measurethe plug gap with a feelergauge.Correctas necessary by bendingsideelectrode.See Figure18.The gap shouldbe set to 0.030in. 4. Checkthatthe sparkplug washeris in good conditionand thread the sparkplug in by handto preventcrossthreading.
Check Engine Oil 1. Checkoil beforeeachuse. Stopengineand wait severalminutes beforecheckingoil level.With the tilleron levelground,the oil mustbe to FULLmarkon dipstick. 2. 3. Removeoil fill dipstickand wipe cleanwith cloth. Replacedipstick intothe oil filler neck,but do not screwitin. Removeand checkoil level. Levelshouldbe at FULLmark. 4. 5. If needed,add oil slowly- recheck.Do not overfill. Wipedipstickclean, replacebut do not tighten.Removeand checkoil level.
Check Transmission Gear Oil Checkthetransmissiongear oil after every 30 hoursof operation or wheneveryou noticeanyoil leak. Operatingthe tiller whenthe transmissionis lowon oil can resultin severedamage. ToCheckthe TransmissionGearOil Level: 1. Checkthegear oil levelwhenthetransmissionis cool. Gearoil will expandin warm operatingtemperaturesand this expansion will providean incorrectoil levelreading. 2. With thetiller on levelground,pull the DepthRegulatorLeverall the wayup.
Beforeperformingany type of maintenanceon the machine,waitfor all partsto stopmovingand disconnectthe spark plugwire. Failure to followthis instructioncouldresult in personalinjuryor property damage. BELT REPLACEMENT If the drive beltor augerbelts needto be replaced,it is best to replace bothbelts at the sametime. Useonly a factory authorizedbeltas an "over-the-counter"beltmay not performsatisfactorily.The procedure requiresaveragemechanicalability and commonlyavailabletools.
6. 7. 8. 9. f Removethehex bolts securingthe transmissiondrivepulley,then removethe pulleyalongwith the two belts. See Figure27. Replacetheold beltswith the new beltsin the sameorder they wereremoved.The longerbelt (1916658)belongscloserto the engine,with the shorterbelt (1916657)positionedcloser to the tines. x Reinstallthe transmissiondrive pulleywith the new belts. Reassemblethe tiller in the reverseorder in whichit was disassembled.
Neverstoretiller withfuel in tank indoorsor in poorlyventilatedareasI wherefuel fumesmay reachan open flame,spark,or pilotlightas on a furnace,water heater,c othesdryer, or gas app ance. PREPARING THE ENGINE Enginesstored between30 and 90 days needto be treatedwith a gasolinestabilizerand enginesstoredover90 days needto be drained of fuel to preventdeteriorationand gumfrom formingin fuel systemor on essentialcarburetorparts.
Beforeperforminganytype d maintenance/service, disengageall controlsand stoptheengine.Waituntilall movingpartshavecometo a completestop.Disconnectsparkplugwireandgroundit againsttheenginetoprevent unintendedstarting.Alwayswearsafetyglassesduringoperationor whileperforminganyadjustmentsor repairs. 1. Inspeccione el aceite del motor 1. Controleel aceiteantes de cada uso. Detengael motor y espere variosrninutosantes de verificarel nivelde aceite.Con la cultivadorasobreuna superficiepareja,el aceite debealcanzarla rnarcaFULL (lleno)de la varilladel nivelde aceite. 2. Extraigala varillade rnedici6nde aceitey sequelacon un trapo. 3.
