Concrete Preparation
It is extremely important to have a consistent mix. If it is too wet, it will slump. If it is too dry, it will
crack.
The sand should be rough, not having gravel much larger than match head. The sand should be
free of dirt and debris. Mortar sand is recommended. DO NOT use silica sand.
The finished mix should have a consistency similar to wet sand used on the beach to make
sandcastles,
The following procedure is typically successful when mixing in a mortar mixer (not included). The
mix is 5 parts sand to 1 part cement.
1. With the mortar mixer running, dump in two five-gallon buckets of sand.
2. Dump in 1/2 of a 94 pound bag of Portland cement.
3. Add 3 more five-gallon buckets of sand.
4. Add water until the mix reaches the proper slump. You should not be able to squeeze water
out of the mix. Do not over mix.
