DESIGN GUIDE - Data Center LAN Connectivity Design Guide
Figure 1: The data center LAN in the enterprise network
Trends and Challenges
In addition to the requirements previously mentioned, the following trends must be considered in a data center
LAN design:
Centralization of Data Centers
To reduce costs, simplify operations and comply with regulatory guidelines, more and more enterprises are
consolidating their data centers. According to a 2006 Nemertes Research report1, 91 percent of companies
interviewed were under compliance constraints and more than 50 percent of the companies consolidated their
dispersed data centers into fewer larger data centers in the past 12 months, with even more planning to consolidate
in the following 12 months. In addition to HA requirements ensuring nonstop operations, centralization raises new
latency and security issues for the data center LAN.
