Install Your New Replacement Windows
Tips for removing your old Double-Hung wood window sash
Step 1 Score the interior stops with a utility knife and carefully remove. Set aside for reuse.
Step 2 Cut the cords running to the upper sash. (Caution: Many older windows have hidden sash weights attached to the sash
with a cord. Before you remove the sash, cut these cords with extreme caution. Ease the weights down until the cord goes
slack. Leave weights inside the frame.) Remove the lower sash.
Step 3 Score and remove the parting stops.
Step 4 Cut the cords running to the upper sash. Remove the sash. If the window has pulleys, remove them or hammer them back
into the frame.
Step 5 From the interior, apply a bead of silicone sealant onto the exterior blind stop at the sides and head.
Step 6 Set the new window into the existing frame. Be sure it makes solid contact with the exterior blind stop.
Step 7 Shim the side jambs 4" from the corners, at the check rails, and at 8" intervals.
Step 8 Fasten window through the shims at all four corners with #10 x 2-1/2" screws. If the jamb is not pre-drilled, use a 1/8" tapered bit
with 3/8" countersink to drill a screw hole in the frame. The countersink should only penetrate the rst vinyl frame wall. For double-
hung windows, fasten through the jambs at the check rails.
Step 9 Apply a sealant joint between the new and existing frames on the interior and exterior on all sides.
Step 10 Replace the interior stops.
