24.11 FO placement limitations
There no limitations on a placement of a FO, other than those that would normally be imposed on
that unit by VBS3. Obviously, the scenario should be designed so that the FO is able to observe the
target area, although VBS3Fires does not strictly enforce this.
24.12 Creating a FO Link
The FO Link is made available in VBS3 which would function when linked to a unit or units placed.
The FO Link is found in the ‘Add Object’ menu in the VBS3 Mission editor. Select this object, and
then double click the map to add it. Adding the FO Link will cause a dialog box to appear within the
VBS3 Offline Mission Editor [OME]. This will contain a number of options for the FO Link. This can be
used to specify the FO Link.
Image 24.16 Configuring the FO in VBS3
Multiple FO Links maybe placed in a mission if required, providing the ability to setup more complex
fire mission scenarios. Also, when running a combined arms scenario, it will facilitate to add Fires FO
Link and Strike FO Link separately.
In VBS3Fires, Menubar Tools Preferences Other Radio Net, the option ‘Automatic’ has to
be selected. The FO Link will only be made active in a mission if this selection is made.
It is critical to note that, if the user decides to conduct a mission using an FO Link, the
mission would load and make all units that are only linked to the FO Link to be in use for fire
missions. However, if an FO Link exists in the mission with linked units and the setting is set to
‘Manual’, the FO Link would be inactive and the units would still function normally responding to the
callsigns loaded from the dat file “radioNets.dat file” or load default callsigns if no radionets.dat file is
placed.
