TOOL CARE
GUIDELINES FOR HAND TOOL SAFETY

The following is intended as a general guide. It is not a comprehensive overview of health and safety standards.
• Check work area for trip hazards, unsafe equipment and potentially flammable materials
• Ensure equipment being worked on is securely mounted in place.
• Know the locations of trip (cut-out) switches, fire extinguishers and escape routes.
• Wear approved personal protective equipment for working conditions (safety glasses, gloves,
masks, safety shoes etc.).
• Never wear loose clothing.
• Never wear hand jewelry in electrical hazard situations.
• Always use correct tool for task.
• Always use correct size tool for application.
• Always disconnect electrical supply when performing maintenance tasks on powered equipment.
• For electrical or live line work, use only approved tools according to international and national
standards.
• When maintaining electrical equipment In extreme cold climate conditions, use only approved
insulated hand tools rated to IEC 60900:2012 Category “C”.
• Regularly inspect insulated tools for the integrity of the insulation before each task.
• Regularly maintain tools and discard damaged tools
• Ensure cutting edge tools are sharp. Blunt tools are prone to slip.
• Dispose of sharp blades in approved sharps containers.
• Always cut away from the body.
• Wrenches should always be pulled not pushed.
• Never use a screwdriver as a chisel or pry bar.
• Store tools safely.
