SECTION 8—HAND BRAKES/WHEEL LOCKS

1. Loosenthebrakehandleadjustmentnutbyturning
clockwise.
2. Performoneofthefollowing:
•Loosenbrakehandletension‐Turnthebrake
handlenutclockwise.
NOTE:Ifthebrakeleverisscrapingtherearwheel,thebrake
handlemustbeloosened.
•Tightenbrakehandletension‐Turnthebrake
handlenutcounterclockwise.
NOTE:If
thebrakeleverdoesnotrespondquickly,tightenbrakes.
3. Turnthebrakehandleadjustmentnut
counterclockwisetosecureinplace.
4. Dooneofthefollowing:
• Acceptabletension‐RepeatSTEPS1‐3forthe
oppositeside,ifnecessary.
• Unacceptabletension‐RefertoAdjustingCable
AdjusterUnitonpage 21.

NOTE:Testthebrakewiththebrakehandle.Observehowthe
brakeleverengagesthewheel.Ifthetensionofthebrakehandleis
stilltoolooseortootight,adjustusingthefollowingsteps:
1. Ensurebrakehandleisnotlocked.
2. Dooneofthe
following:
•ToLoosen:Bracethejamnutwhileturningthe
adjustmentscrewclockwise.
•ToTighten:Bracethejamnutwhileturningthe
adjustmentscrewcounterclockwise.
3. Repeatwithotherbrake.

NOTE:Forthisprocedure,refertoFIGU RE 8.4.
1. Loosentheboltandlocknutthatsecurethewheellock
assemblytothetransportchairframe.
2. Adjustthepositionofwheellockuntilthe
measurementbetweentherearwheelandthewheel
lockshoeisbetween5/32and5/16‐inches.
3. Securelytightentheboltand
locknut.
4. Engagethewheellock.
5. Pushagainstthetransportchairandde termineifthe
wheellockengagesthewheellockshoeenoughtohold
thetransportchair.
6. Repeattheaboveproceduresuntilthewheellockholds
thetransportchair.
7. RepeatSTEPS1‐6fortheoppositewheellock.
