1 Getting Started 1.1 Your Phone Congratulations on your new phone purchase. This guide will help you quickly come up to speed on the important features of your phone. Keep in mind your phone has: • F ast Processor: Featuring the 1.2GHz Intel® Atom™ processor that enables fast web browsing, super-responsive apps, and effortless multi-tasking, so that enjoying the things you love to do has never been easier.
1.2 Phone Buttons Buttons Press to go back to the previous screen or to close a menu or dialog box. Press to display actions and settings specific to the current screen. Press to return to the center panel of the Home screen. TIP: Press and hold to display shortcuts to your most recently-used apps. Earpiece Press to view recently used apps. Click on an app to launch it. You can also access Task manager from this screen. (See Managing Applications.
1.4 Charge the Battery 1.5 Insert Battery/SD Card/SIM Card Before using your phone for the first time, charge the phone for four hours. 1. 2. 3. 4. To charge the battery: 1. Attach one end of the USB cord to the phone’s micro-USB port and the other end to the plug. 2. Plug the phone into the wall. Connect this end to phone’s USB port. Turn phone over and locate slot on bottom. Pull up on slot to remove back cover. Insert card(s) according to diagram. Insert battery with arrow pointing to top of phone.
1.6 Using the Headset 1.7 Turn on the Phone You can use your headset to listen to music or make phone calls. To turn on the phone: To use the headset: 1. Plug the headset into the audio jack on your phone. 2. Place the earbuds in your ears and position the microphone so that it picks up your voice (if you are making a call). • Hold down the power button to turn the phone on. 1.8 Sleep & Wake 1.9 Touchscreen When your phone is on, you can put the phone in sleep mode and lock your phone. Your phone will go into sleep mode if left idle, to save battery life. Use your fingers on the touchscreen to perform actions, open objects, slide the screen, and more. You can wake and unlock your phone when you’re ready to use it. Below are the different ways of interacting with your touchscreen.
2 Home Screen & Basic Features To scroll the Home screen: The Home screen is a gateway to all of your phone’s applications and features, and displays whenever you turn on your phone. Touch Google to search the web via text input tray. Swipe left or right to see more panels. Touch and hold to change the wallpaper. Touch an app to open it. • Slide the screen to the left or right. TIP: The bar at the bottom of the screen indicates which one of the five panels is displayed.
2.1 Customizing Your Home Screen You can easily customize your Home screen by changing the background picture (or wallpaper). TIP: Rearrange items on your screen by touching and holding them and then dragging them to a new location. You can also delete them by touching and holding and then dragging them to the trash. You can perform the following actions with folders. To open a folder Touch the folder. To make a new folder, stack apps on top of each other in the home screen.
2.2 Status & Notification Icons 2.2.1 Status Icons The status bar at the top of the screen displays important information about your phone. Below are the status and notification icons you can expect to see. Notification icons Status icons NOTE: Installed apps may use their own unique notification icons. 2.3.1 Search Settings 2.5 Using the App Launcher You can change the default Search settings. Apps are small programs that add features to your phone. Many apps come preinstalled, and additional apps can be purchased in the Play Store. To change Search settings: • From the Search screen, press Widgets are apps that run directly on your Home screen, such as a music player, newspaper, or clock. Search settings. 3 Onscreen Keyboard Basics The onscreen keyboard lets you use your touchscreen to dial numbers, type emails, enter URLs, and more. Capitalize the next letter Touch Touch Delete text to erase the last character entered. Touch Touch and hold to continuously erase characters. To use the Onscreen Keyboard: •T ouch any text field to display the onscreen keyboard, then touch the characters on the keyboard to enter text. TIP: Move the insertion point by touching where you want to enter text.
4 Making & Answering Calls The Phone app allows you to make calls and easily store and find your contacts. You can move between the phone dialer, call history, contacts, and favorites by touching the tabs at the top of the Phone app. 4.1 Using the Phone Tab The Phone app’s Phone tab lets you make and manage calls. To make a call: . 1. From the Home screen, touch 2. Touch the numbers on the dial pad to dial a number, using corrections. 3. Touch to dial the number.
The following actions are available while you are on a call: 4.1.1 Working with Multiple Calls To hold a call Touch To mute a call Touch To use speakerphone to turn speakerphone on or off. Touch Warning! To avoid damage to your hearing, do not hold the phone against your ear when speakerphone is turned on. • While on a call, touch To use a Bluetooth headset Touch to automatically transfer your calls to a connected Bluetooth headset. See Wireless Bluetooth Connection for more information.
The following options are available when on a conference call: To drop a participant Touch Manage, then touch To talk privately to a participant . When you are done Touch Manage, then touch talking privately, touch Merge Calls to add the participant back to the conference call. To end the call Touch all callers. . 4.2 Answering & Rejecting Calls When you receive a call, you will see the following screen: to end the conference call and disconnect To accept a call: • Drag the circle to .
4.3 Using the Call Log Tab 4.4 Using the Contacts Tab The call log lists calls you have made, missed, and received. You can also call entries, send messages, and add caller information to contacts. The Contacts tab displays the contacts from your accounts along with any contacts you have added. To use the call log: . • From the Phone app, touch The following options are available from the call log. 4.4.1 Contact Synchronization To see more details Touch an entry.
To communicate with contacts: • Touch the contact, then touch one of the following icons: TIP: Use the following controls to add information about the contact: Touch the phone number to call a contact. Touch to send a text message. Touch the email address to send an email. To add a contact: 1. From the Contacts tab, press Settings New Contact. 2. Enter contact information, filling in as many or as few of the fields as desired. 3.
To join contacts: 1. From the Home screen, touch the Contacts icon and then touch a contact. Press Edit Join. 2. Touch All contacts. TIP: The name and picture of the contact you select first will be used for the resulting joined contact. NOTE: Contacts with the same name from two different accounts are automatically joined. To separate contacts: •F rom the Home screen, touch the Contacts icon and then touch a contact. Edit Separate. Press 4.
5 Sending & Receiving Messages 5.1 Sending messages The Message app allows you to send and receive text and multimedia messaging threads (groups of sent and received messages). To open the messaging app: • From the Home screen, touch . To view a message: • Within the Message app, touch a messaging thread. The messages inside the thread will be displayed, with the newest message at the top of the screen. TIP: Threads with new messages are displayed in bold. To send a message: 1.
To attach multimedia to a message: 1. Press Attach. 2. S elect the desired type of attachment (for example, a music file or a captured picture), then follow the prompts to send the message. Message Options The following actions are available while composing a message. Save message as a draft . Press ALTERNATE: Exiting the Message app will also save any draft messages. Resume working on a draft Touch the message thread you were composing and resume entering your message.
5.3 Message Settings Notification Settings To specify message settings: • From the main Messaging window, press Notifications Set to show message content, to only show sender, or to not show notification. Message alert Choose a ringtone to play whenever a new message is received. Settings. The following settings are available: Text (SMS) Messages Delivery reports Request a delivery report whenever you send a text message.
6 Taking Photos & Videos The Camera app lets you take and share pictures and videos. To start the Camera app: • Touch in the App Launcher. To take a picture: 1. Frame your subject on the camera. 2. Touch the Shutter button to take your picture and save the image to the Gallery. To shoot a video: 1. From the Camera app, touch the Mode button, and then select . 2. Touch the Shutter button to begin recording. When done, press the Shutter button again to stop recording and save the video to the Gallery.
Use shooting modes: There are four shooting mode options: Photo Video Burst Panorama Touch the Mode button beneath the red Shutter button to display these options. Selecting a new mode changes the icon on the shutter button to match the current mode. Use panorama mode: Select the Panorama mode to sweep across a screen (horizontally or vertically) and capture multiple images that will be automatically stitched together into a single panoramic image.
To change advanced settings: Camera settings are available at any time by pressing include: Photo size, Video size, Geo-tag, and About. . These settings Two photo sizes are available. The default size is a widescreen 4MP image; you may also choose an 5MP image that is in 4:3 format and appears centered in the screen. 6.1 View Your Pictures & Video Pictures and videos taken with the Camera app are stored in the Social Gallery app, but they can be previewed within the main camera screen also.
7 Browsing the Web The browser application lets you surf the web on your phone. To open the browser application: • Press . The Browser window opens and displays your home page. You can slide the screen up and down to scroll the browser window and use the touchscreen to interact with the web page. To navigate the browser: • Press to move to the previous page. • Press Forward to move to the next page. • Press Stop to stop loading a page. To enter a URL or search term: 1.
7.1 Bookmarks, Most Visited & History 7.2 Using multiple browser windows Easily bookmark frequently-visited sites, as well as view your bookmarks, history, and most-visited sites. You can have up to 16 different browser windows open at one time. To bookmark a site: • Touch Save to bookmarks. 1. Press 2. Edit the information, if desired, then touch OK to confirm. To close a window: To view bookmarks, history, and most visited sites: 1. Press Bookmarks. 2.
7.4 Changing Browser Settings You can configure a number of Browser settings, such as how pages display or whether to track private information. To change your browser settings: • Press Settings. Popular Browser Settings Refresh Reloads the current page. Forward Moves to the next page. Bookmarks Displays bookmarked and saved pages. Save to bookmarks Adds current page to bookmarked pages. Share page Shares the current page using choice you select.
8 Playing Music To play music: The Music app lets you listen to your music, see your music library, and create and listen to playlists. To open the Music app: • From the App launcher, touch . The Music app opens and displays your library. •T ouch a song to play it and all of the songs following it. For example, touch a song in an album to start playing the album, or touch a song in a playlist to start playing the playlist.

Touch Touch resume playing. to at the bottom of the library screen to return to the playback 8.2 Working with Playlists 8.3 Managing Music on Your Phone You can delete music on your phone. To delete a song from your phone: 1. Find the song you want to delete. 2. Touch and hold the song, then touch Delete. 3. Touch OK to confirm. You can use playlists to organize your music files into sets of songs. 8.3.
9 FM Radio 9.2 Set Favorite Channels The FM Radio app plays your favorite FM radio stations on your phone. You can save six channels as favorites. You can quickly switch between these channels with the press of just one button. NOTE: You must have a headset plugged into your phone to be able to use the FM Radio app. To set a channel as a favorite, tune to that channel and then touch and . That channel number will now hold one of the empty favorite buttons: appear on that button: .
The first time you enter Channel Management, only your favorite channels are listed. Touch SCAN CHANNEL to add all available channels to the list. 9.4.1 Settings NOTE: A yellow star denotes a favorite channel. Touch a yellow star to remove that channel from your favorites. Touch a white star to add that channel to your favorites. • Enable RDS (Radio Data System): If checked, RDS info will display on main screen. Touch any channel to tune to that channel and exit Channel Management.
10 Connections 10.2 Wireless Bluetooth® Connection Your phone can connect to Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth wireless technologyenabled products (such as headsets), and your computer. You can also connect to virtual private networks (or VPNs) and use your phone as a hotspot. 10.1 Using Wi-Fi Connect to Wi-Fi networks to browse the internet, check your email, and more. TIP: Use a Wi-Fi connection to help save on data costs. To connect to a wireless network: 1. 2. 3. 4.
10.3 Transfer Files between your Phone & Computer 10.4 Connecting to Virtual Private Networks Transfer files between your phone and computer by connecting your phone to your computer’s USB port. Virtual private networks (VPNs) allow you to connect to a secured local network from outside the network. VPNs are commonly deployed by schools, corporations, and other institutions that rely primarily on an on-location network but allow secure access from the outside.
10.5 Sharing Your Phone’s Data Connection 10.5.2 Share your Phone’s Data Connection as a Wi-Fi Hotspot You can share your phone’s data connection with a computer, allowing that computer to access the internet by using your phone’s data stream. You can share your phone’s data connection with a single computer by using USB tethering or with up to eight computers at a time by enabling the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot setting.
11 Accounts You can keep your phone synchronized with your Google, email, and corporate accounts, as well as synchronizing contacts with other applications. To change an account’s synchronization settings: 1. From Accounts & sync, touch the account synchronization setting you want to change. 2. In the next screen, check or uncheck the type of information you want synchronized.
12 Email Use the Email app to access your web-based email (such as Yahoo or Hotmail) or your corporate accounts (using Microsoft Exchange). The screen shots in this chapter show a Gmail account set up using the Email app. NOTE: Before using the Email app, first set up your accounts as described below. To use the Email app: • Touch . Your inbox will be displayed, with new messages at the top and unread messages in bold.
To read a message: To send a message: 1. Touch . 2. Enter the recipient, subject, and message text. 3. Touch to send the message, press Save draft to save it as a Discard to discard unsaved drafts. draft, or press • Touch a message to open it. The following actions are available while working with a message: To open or save an attachment Touch View or Save to open or save an attachment. To display images Touch Show pictures to display images within a message.
12.1 Working with Accounts 12.1.1 Account Settings If you have more than one email account, you can switch between inboxes using the Accounts screen. To change an account’s settings: NOTE: Adding and removing accounts is described in Accounts. To open the Accounts screen: •F rom an account’s inbox, press for which you want to change settings.
13 Calendar The Calendar app lets you create and manage events, meetings, and appointments. By default, your Calendar app automatically synchronizes with any Google or Microsoft Exchange accounts you have added to your phone. NOTE: See Accounts for information on how to add accounts to your phone and how to configure the synchronization of existing accounts. To use the Calendar app: • Touch 13.
13.2 Storing & Displaying Calendars To view an event’s details: • Touch an event to view its details. The following actions are available while viewing an event’s details: To respond to an invitation Touch the drop-down menu below Attending, then touch Snooze all or Dismiss all. To add reminders Use the drop-down menus to select a reminder lead time and a notification. Touch Add reminder to add an additional reminder. Press to exit the event and save reminders.
14 Gmail The following actions are available while working with a message: You can create a Gmail account for your phone or sync your phone with your existing Gmail account. To view or save an Touch View or Save to open or save an attachment. attachment To display images NOTE: Before using the Gmail app, set up your accounts as described in Accounts. Touch Show pictures to display images within the text of a message. To reply to reply to the sender or touch Touch all to reply to all recipients.
15 Other Phone Functions Your phone has several other functions, including downloads, navigation, and automatic updates. 15.1 Updating Software As updated versions of your phone’s software become available, you can download them directly onto your phone over a Wi-Fi connection. There are three ways in which your phone can be updated: Manually check for and install updates: 1. Press System settings About Phone. 2. Touch System updates and then touch Update from OTA. 3.
15.3 Managing applications The Manage Applications screen lets you see and manage your installed applications by uninstalling an application, changing where an application is stored, and more. Important. Forcibly stopping an application may cause temporary errors on your phone and require you to restart your phone to restore full functionality. To uninstall an application: 1. From the Apps screen, touch the Downloaded tab to view all downloaded applications. 2. Touch the application you want to uninstall.
15.4 Clock 15.5 Calculator The Clock app displays the time and allows you to set alarms. The Calculator app lets you use your phone as a calculator. To open the Clock app: To use the Calculator app • Touch , then touch . To add an alarm: 1. Touch in the middle of the clock screen. 2. Touch Add alarm. 3. Set the alarm time. 4. Touch Set. 5. Customize any additional alarm settings, such as ringtone or repeat. 6. Touch OK. • Touch , then touch .
15.6 Global Positioning System (GPS) GPS is a satellite navigation system that provides incredibly accurate location information. Receivers pull down information from an array of satellites to calculate the user’s three-dimensional position. GPS technology can be found in many devices, from phones and wristwatches to ships and airplanes. TIP: You can get directions or a street view for a location by touching the location on the map and then choosing Directions or pressing Street view. 15.6.
16 Changing Phone Settings The settings window displays all of the settings that affect how your phone looks and works. To open the settings window: • From the Home screen, press System settings. 16.1 Wireless & Networks The Wireless & networks section configures your phone’s connections, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology. Support for Wi-Fi Direct lets you connect directly to nearby peer devices over Wi-Fi for more reliable, higherspeed communication.
16.2 Device Storage displays the usage of internal storage and USB storage. Sound settings let you configure your phone’s sounds. Battery displays the battery’s current charge, along with the battery usage of applications. Volumes Set the volume for each sound made by your phone, such as media or incoming calls. Silent mode Set your phone sounds to Off, Vibrate, or Mute. Phone ringtone Select the ringtone for a phone call. You can also select a song as a ringtone through the Music App.
Language & input Touch Language to choose a new language from the menu. • Spelling correction: Toggle off/on. • Personal dictionaries: Display the user dictionaries used to identify words you type. Touch the red X next to a word to delete it. Touch a word to edit it. Touch the plus sign to add a new word. • Keyboard & Input Methods: Display the onscreen keyboards available on your phone. Touch the sliders on the right to configure a keyboard. For more information, see Onscreen Keyboard Basics.
17 Troubleshooting Phone does not respond: Use the following tips to troubleshoot any issues on your phone. Outgoing calls are not connected: • Ensure that you have touched to dial the number. • Ensure that you are connected to the correct cellular network. • Ensure the phone is fully charged. • Try turning the phone off and then turning it back on. • If the above does not work, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds until the phone turns off.
18 Safety, Regulatory & Legal SAFETY AND OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES • Please use only the power supply that was supplied with your phone. Failure to do so may damage the phone. The power supply must be plugged into an easily accessible AC mains power socket when charging the battery. The only way to turn off the charging device after charging the battery is to unplug it. IMPORTANT: Review and adhere to these guidelines. Failure to do so may be dangerous or illegal.
