1 Getting Started 1.1 Your Phone Congratulations on your new phone purchase. This guide will help you quickly come up to speed on the important features of your phone. 1.2 Phone Buttons Buttons Power Button Press to display actions and settings specific to the current screen. Press to return to the center panel of the Home screen. TIP: Press and hold to display shortcuts to your most recently-used apps. 3.5 mm Audio Jack Front-Facing Camera Press to go back to the previous screen or to close a menu or dialog box. Earpiece Press to search your phone and the web. See Search for more information. Power button Press and hold to turn your phone on.
1.4 Charge the Battery 1.5 Insert Micro-SIM Card Before using your phone for the first time, charge the phone for four hours. If your micro-SIM card is not already installed in your phone, follow these procedures to insert a micro-SIM card. To charge the battery: 1. Attach one end of the USB cord to the phone’s micro-USB port and the other end to the plug. 2. Plug the phone into the wall. To insert the micro-SIM card: 1. Open the micro-SIM card tray with the included SIM eject tool. 2.
1.6 Using the Headset To turn the phone off: You can use your headset to listen to music or make phone calls. • Hold down the power button and touch Power Off. To use the headset: 1. Plug the headset into the audio jack on your phone. 2. Place the earbuds in your ears and position the microphone so that it picks up your voice (if you’re making a call). L R Hold down the power button, then touch Power off to turn the phone off.
NOTE: If you press the power button for too long, you’ll see the power off menu. To wake the phone: 1. Press the Power button. 2. Place your finger on and slide it all the way to the right. 3. Your phone’s screen will resume display. Use your fingers on the touchscreen to perform actions, open objects, slide the screen, and more. Below are the different ways of interacting with your touchscreen. • Drag: Touch and hold an object then drag the object to a new location.
2 Home Screen & Basic Features To scroll the Home screen: The Home screen is a gateway to all of your phone’s applications and features, and displays whenever you turn on your phone. Touch Google to search the web via text input tray. Touch and hold to change the wallpaper. • Slide the screen to the left or right. TIP: The blue bar at the bottom of the screen indicates which one of the five panels is displayed. To quickly access your phone’s main functions: Slide left or right to see more panels.
2.1 Customizing Your Home Screen You can easily customize your Home screen by changing the background picture (or wallpaper). TIP: Rearrange items on your screen by touching and holding them and then dragging them to a new location. You can also delete them by touching and holding and then dragging them to the trash. You can perform the following actions with folders. To open a folder Touch the folder. To make a new folder, stack apps on top of each other in the home screen.
2.2.1 Status Icons Below are the status and notification icons you can expect to see. Drag down to display notifications. Touch to clear notifications. Touch a notification to respond. NOTE: Installed apps may use their own unique notification icons.

2.3.1 Search Settings 2.5 Using the App Launcher You can change the default Search settings. Apps are small programs that add features to your phone. Many apps come preinstalled, and additional apps can be purchased in the Play Store. To change Search settings: Search settings. Widgets are apps that run directly on your Home screen, such as a music player, newspaper, or clock. Select which applications to search by default.
3 Onscreen Keyboard Basics The onscreen keyboard lets you use your touchscreen to dial numbers, type emails, enter URLs, and more. Onscreen Keyboard Options While using the onscreen keyboard, the following options are available. Switch keyboard display Touch the ?123 key to enter numbers and symbols, or the ABC key to enter letters. To see additional symbols while in symbol display, touch =\<. Capitalize the next letter Touch to capitalize the next letter you enter. Touch twice to turn CAPS LOCK on.
To use the suggestions feature: 1. Begin entering text in a text field or message.Your phone displays suggested words and punctuation directly above the keyboard. 2. Touch a suggested word or punctuation mark to enter it, or drag the display to the right to see more suggestions. 3.2 Swype Keyboard Swype(TM) is a powerful tool that lets you ‘swipe’ your finger across the keyboard to spell out and enter words. TIP: Touch the spacebar after entering a word to append a period.
4 Making & Answering Calls The Phone app allows you to make calls and easily store and find your contacts. You can move between the phone dialer, call history, contacts, and favorites by touching the tabs at the top of the Phone app. 4.1 Using the Phone Tab The Phone app’s Phone tab lets you make and manage calls. To make a call: . 1. From the Home screen, touch 2. Touch the numbers on the dial pad to dial a number, using corrections. 3. Touch to dial the number.
The following actions are available while you are on a call. 4.1.1 Working with Multiple Calls To hold a call Touch To mute a call Touch To use speakerphone to turn speakerphone on or off. Touch Warning! To avoid damage to your hearing, do not hold the phone against your ear when speakerphone is turned on. • While on a call, touch Add Call and dial another number. To use a Bluetooth headset Touch to automatically transfer your calls to a connected Bluetooth headset.
The following options are available when on a conference call. To drop a participant Touch Manage, then touch To talk privately to a participant . When you are done Touch Manage, then touch talking privately, touch Merge Calls to add the participant back to the conference call. To end the call to end the conference call and disconnect Touch all callers. . 4.2 Answering & Rejecting Calls When you receive a call, you will see the following screen. To accept a call: • Drag the circle to .
4.3 Using the Call Log Tab The following options are available from the call log. The call log lists calls you have made, missed, and received. You can also call entries, send messages, and add caller information to contacts from the call log. To use the call log: • From the Phone app, touch To see more details Touch an entry. To call the entry Touch To send a text message Touch the entry to see more details, then touch Send Text Message.
4.4 Using the Contacts Tab The Contacts tab displays the contacts from your accounts along with any contacts you have added. 4.4.1 Contact Synchronization By default, contacts in your accounts and on your phone will be synchronized, so that any changes to the contacts on your phone will be matched in your accounts, and vice versa. See Accounts for more information. Depending on your account settings, information you add or remove from your phone will be synchronized with your external accounts.
TIP: Log into your Google account to manage your contacts online. Add, edit or remove contacts, and they’ll automatically sync to your phone. NOTE: Read-only contact information—such as that from an external app— will only be hidden, not deleted. To join contacts: 1. From the homescreen, touch the Contacts icon and then touch a contact. Press Edit Join. 2. Touch All contacts. TIP: The name and picture of the contact you select first will be used for the resulting joined contact.
4.5 Quick Contacts 4.6 Contact Settings You can fine-tune how contacts are displayed with the following settings. To set display options: • From the Contacts tab, touch Some applications let you use Quick Contacts to easily call, message, or otherwise communicate with a contact. Just look for the Quick Contacts icon . To use quick contacts: 1. Touch , then touch one of the app icons to communicate with the contact using the selected app. Settings.
5 Sending & Receiving Messages 5.1 Sending messages The Message app allows you to send and receive text and multimedia messaging threads (groups of sent and received messages). To open the messaging app: • From the Home screen, touch . To view a message: • Within the Message app, touch a messaging thread. The messages inside the thread display, with the newest message at the bottom of the screen. TIP: Threads with new messages are displayed in bold. To send a message: 1. From the Message app, touch .
To attach multimedia to a message: 1. Touch . 5.2 Managing Messages 2. S elect the desired type of attachment (for example, a music file or a captured picture), then follow the prompts to send the message. To delete a messaging thread: •O pen the messaging window, and touch a messaging thread. . Then touch Message Options The following actions are available while composing a message. TIP: Press Delete all threads to delete all messaging threads. To forward, lock, or view message details: 1.
5.3 Message Settings Multimedia (MMS) Messages To specify message settings: • From the main Messaging window, press The following settings are available. Storage Settings Delete old messages Automatically delete the oldest message in a messaging thread whenever the message limits are exceeded. Text message limit Set the number of text messages to save in each messaging thread. If Delete old messages is enabled, your oldest text message will be deleted whenever this limit is exceeded.
6 take photos and videos Camera buttons and icons Once opened, the Camera app displays the following icons and buttons: The Camera app lets you take and share pictures and videos. To start the Camera app: • Touch in the App Launcher or press and hold the camera button on the side of the phone until the Camera app opens. Touch the Mode button to switch between photo, video, burst, and panorama modes. Selecting a new mode changes the icon on the shutter button to match the current mode.
Change flash settings: Press the Flash icon to choose a setting from the options displayed at the bottom of the screen: Auto flash, Flash off, Flash on, and Fill flash. Use image tools: Press the Tools icon to display the Image Tools menu, which is a two-level menu controlled by the up and down arrows on the left side. The current flash selection is displayed at the top of the screen. The first level is “Scene Mode” and is used to select pre-sets for Landscape, Portrait, Night Scene, and Fireworks.
Use shooting modes: There are four shooting mode options: Photo Video Burst Panorama Touch the Mode button beneath the red Shutter button to display these options. Selecting a new mode changes the icon on the shutter button to match the current mode. Use panorama mode: Select the Panorama mode to sweep across a screen (horizontally or vertically) and capture multiple images that will be automatically stitched together into a single panoramic image.
To change advanced settings: Camera settings are available at any time by pressing include: Photo size, Video size, Geo-tag, and About. . These settings Two photo sizes are available. The default size is a widescreen 6MP image; you may also choose an 8MP image that is in 4:3 format and appears centered in the screen. 6.1 face recognition Your phone’s camera is equipped with a state-of-the-art face recognition system that is designed to make it easy to connect to friends and family through photography.
• Portions of the face are obstructed. • Faces are in profile or turned so that not all features are visible. As a general rule, both eyes and the mouth must be visible. 7 Browsing the Web The browser application lets you surf the web on your Android phone. To open the browser application: • Press . The Browser window opens and displays your home page. You can slide the screen up and down to scroll the browser window, and use the touchscreen to interact with the web page. To navigate the browser: • Press to move to the previous page. • Press Forward to move to the next page. • Press Stop to stop loading a page. To enter a URL or search terms: 1.
7.1 Bookmarks, Most Visited & History 7.2 Using multiple browser windows Easily bookmark frequently-visited sites, as well as view your bookmarks, history, and most-visited sites. You can have up to eight different browser windows open at one time. To bookmark a site: at the top of the screen. 1. Touch 2. Touch Add. 3. Edit the information if desired, then touch OK to confirm. • Touch To view bookmarks, history, and most visited sites: To open a new window: 1. Touch Bookmarks. 2.
7.4 Changing Browser Settings You can configure a number of Browser settings, such as how pages display, or whether to track private information. To change your browser settings: • Press More Settings Popular Browser Settings Refresh Reloads the current page. Forward Moves to the next page. Bookmarks Displays bookmarked and saved pages. Save to bookmarks Adds current page to bookmarked pages. Share page Shares the current page using choice you select.
8 Playing Music To view music on your phone: The Music app lets you listen to your music, see your music library, and create and listen to playlists. •T ouch one of the four tabs at the top of the screen to display Artists, Albums, Songs, or Playlists. To open the Music app: • From the App launcher, touch . The Music app opens and displays your library. TIP: To use a song as a ringtone, touch and hold the song, then touch Use as phone ringtone.
To see the current playlist Touch . To play your songs in random order Touch . To repeat a playlist or song once to repeat the current playlist, Touch or twice to repeat all songs; touch again to repeat current song, and touch once more to turn repeat off. To open audio effects . See “Audio Effects” below to learn Touch about changing playback settings. Play the next song Touch . Play the previous song Touch . Pause or resume playing to pause the current song, or Touch to resume.
Equalizer functions Visualizer functions Music visualizations can be displayed while your music is playing. Function Description Equalizer Displays current preset. Equalizer Presets Touch the word current preset on the right to open the drop down menu. Select a desired preset. Bass boost Touch and slide to increase/decrease the bass boost to the desired level. NOTE: This effect is available only with headphones plugged in. Treble Touch and slide to increase/decrease the treble level.
9 Connections Your Android phone can connect to Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth wireless technology-enabled products (such as headsets), and your computer. You can also connect to virtual private networks (or VPNs) and use your phone as a hotspot. 9.1 Using Wi-Fi Your phone can connect to Wi-Fi networks. Once connected, you can use your connection to browse the internet, check your email, and more. Use a Wi-Fi network to help save on data costs for your phone. To disconnect a Bluetooth wireless technology-enabled product: 1. From the Home screen, press System settings Wireless & networks Bluetooth settings. 2. 9.5 Connecting to Virtual Private Networks 9.6 Sharing Your Phone’s Data Connection Virtual private networks (VPNs) allow you to connect to a secured local network from outside the network. VPNs are commonly deployed by schools, corporations, and other institutions that rely primarily on an on-location network, but allow secure access from the outside. You can share your phone’s data connection with a computer, allowing that computer to access the internet by using your phone’s data stream.
9.6.2 Share your Phone’s Data Connection as a Wi-Fi Hotspot You can turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot to let other computers and devices use your phone’s data connection as a wireless network. To turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot: More... (under the Wireless & Networks section) 1. System settings Tethering & portable hotspot. 2. Touch Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to enable it. Your phone will broadcast its Wi-Fi SSID, and can be connected to like any other wireless network.
10 Accounts 3. Touch to confirm deletion. You can keep your phone synchronized with your Google, email, and corporate accounts, as well as synchronizing contacts with other applications. NOTE: You can only remove your first Google account by deleting all personal information from your phone. To change an account’s synchronization settings: 1. From Accounts & sync, touch the account synchronization setting you want to change. 2.
11 Email Use the Email app to access your web-based email (such as Yahoo or Hotmail) and your corporate accounts (using Microsoft Exchange). The screen shots in this chapter show a Gmail account set up using the Email app. NOTE: Before using the Email app, first set up your accounts as described below. To use the Email app: • Touch . Your inbox displays, displaying new messages at the top and unread messages bolded.
To read a message: • Touch a message to open it. To star a message Touch . To open previous or next message Touch or at the bottom of the screen. To send a message: . 1. Touch 2. Enter the recipient, subject, and message text. 3. Touch to send the message, press Save draft to save it as a draft, or press Discard to discard unsaved drafts. The following actions are available while working with a message. To open or save an attachment Touch View or Save to open or save an attachment.
11.1 Working with Accounts NOTE: Only folders containing messages are displayed. If you have more than one Email account, you can switch between inboxes using the Accounts screen. NOTE: Adding and removing accounts is described in Accounts. To open the Accounts screen: • Press Accounts. 11.1.1 Account Settings To change an account’s settings: •F rom the Accounts screen, touch whose settings you want to change, then touch Settings.
12 Calendar 12.1 Viewing Your Events The Calendar app lets you create and manage events, meetings and appointments. By default, your Calendar app automatically synchronizes with any Google or Microsoft Exchange accounts you’ve added to your phone. NOTE: See Accounts for information on how to add accounts to your phone, and on how to configure the synchronization of existing accounts.
12.2 Storing & Displaying Calendars To view an event’s details: • Touch an event to view its details. The following actions are available while viewing an event’s details. For each of your synchronized calendar accounts, you can set whether the calendars are stored on the phone and whether they are visible. To respond to an invitation Touch the drop-down menu below Attending, then touch Snooze all or Dismiss all.
13 gmail To view account folders: You can create a Gmail account for your phone, or sync your phone with your existing Gmail account. NOTE: Before using the Gmail app, first set up your accounts as described in Accounts. , then touch . Your Gmail inbox displays. NOTE: If you have multiple Gmail accounts, touch the top-left corner (with the name of the Gmail account) to switch to another account. 13.0 GMAIL To read a message: • Touch a conversation.

14 Other Phone Functions Your phone has several other functions, including downloads, navigation, and automatic updates. 14.1 Updating Software As updated versions of your phone’s software become available, you can download them directly onto your phone. To check for and install updates: 1. Press System settings About Phone. 2. Touch System updates and then touch Check for Updates. 3. If updated software is available, touch Download and Install. You can monitor the download in the Notifications Panel. 4.
To stop an application: 1. From the Apps screen, touch the Downloaded tab to view all applications you have downloaded. 2. Touch the application you want to stop. 3. Touch Force stop. 14.4 Clock The Clock app displays the time and allows you to set alarms. To open the Clock app: • Touch , then touch . Important. Forcibly stopping an application may cause temporary errors on your phone, and require you to restart your phone to restore full functionality. To uninstall an application: 1.
14.5 Calculator 14.6 GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) The calculator app lets you use your phone as a calculator. GPS is a satellite navigation system that provides incredibly accurate location information. Receivers pull down information from an array of satellites to calculate the user’s three-dimensional position. GPS technology can be found in many devices, from phones and wristwatches, to ships and airplanes, to ATMs and pet collars. To use the calculator app • Touch , then touch .
14.6.1 Maps 14.6.2 Nav Google Maps lets you find any location using your phone. Google Nav turns your phone into a GPS navigation device. To use Google Maps in the App Launcher. 1. Touch 2. E nter an address, a city, a business name, or a type of establishment in the search box. 3. Touch or touch a suggested location. To use Google Nav in the App Launcher. 1. Touch 2. Enter an address. 3. Touch . TIP: Select a contact or starred place to quickly navigate to a favorite location.
15 changing phone settings The settings window displays all of the settings that affect how your phone looks and works. Touch More... to access the following options. Airplane mode Disable all wireless connections, including Bluetooth wireless technology and 3G. Activating airplane mode greys out some other settings. VPN Configure your Virtual Private Network. Tethering & portable hotspot Configure your phone for tethering or for use as a portable hotspot with the following settings.
Mobile networks Configure your mobile data network using the following settings. • Data enabled: Clear this checkbox to prevent your phone from transmitting data on any mobile network. This is useful when you’re traveling and wish to avoid charges for data use on a local carrier’s network, and can also decrease the battery usage. Disabling data does not prevent your phone from transmitting data on other networks, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth wireless technology-enabled products.
15.3 personal Backup & reset Accounts & sync Add, remove, and manage your accounts (including Google and Microsoft Exchange accounts.) For more information on working with accounts and synchronizing data, see Accounts. Location services Toggle off/on GPS and search features that use your current location. Security Secure your phone with a Double-tap, Face Unlock, Pattern, PIN, or password. See Securing your phone for more information. • Set up SIM card lock: Require a PIN each time it is powered on.
15.4 system Date & time The Date & time settings screen configures how the date and time are displayed on your phone. You can also use this screen to manually enter the date and time, rather than obtaining the current time from the mobile network. • Automatic date & time: Uncheck to set the date and time on the phone manually, rather than obtaining the current time from the mobile network.
16 Troubleshooting • Make sure the phone is fully charged. Use the following tips to troubleshoot any issues on your phone. • Try turning the phone off, and then turning it back on. Outgoing calls are not connected: • If the above doesn’t work, press and hold power button for 10 seconds until the phone turns off. Then release the power button, and then turn the phone back on. • Ensure that you have touched to dial the number. • Ensure that you’re connected to the correct cellular network.
