RDX SPANNING
rdX SpAnning For lArge dAtA SetS
When the data to be backed up to RDX exceeds the capacity of a single
cartridge the system will need to use more than one cartridge which
is called ‘spanning’ across multiple RDX cartridges. RDX spanning is
based on use of the Unix TAR (Tape Archive) command and will create
containers of a specific size (based on the capacity of the RDX cartridge
that is mounted at the time the RDX Spanning Backup is started).
Individual files cannot be viewed in the TAR container, and the only way
to get an individual file is to Restore the entire RDX Spanning Backup
job. RDX Spanning works only with RDX cartridges and any data that
pre-exists on an RDX cartridge used in an RDX Spanning backup will
be overwritten.
running An rdX SpAnning bACkup:
1. Prepare the RDX cartridges by labeling them with the sequence
in which they will be used (Cartridge #1, Cartridge #2, etc.). The
TAR filenames put onto the RDX cartridges during the spanning
operation will be called disk1.tar, disk2.tar, etc. (Note: Using the
Setting option of File Name Prefix can change ‘disk’ to something
dierent), but it is helpful to have an external label to assist
managing the RDX cartridge pool. If the RDX cartridges are not the
same capacity make sure the first cartridge is the lowest capacity
since the TAR container size is based on this first cartridge capacity,
and, if the TAR container size is based on an RDX cartridge that has
more capacity than the lowest capacity RDX cartridge, then when
the lower capacity cartridge is inserted the TAR container will not fit
and an error will be posted.
2. Insert the first RDX cartridge. You can check whether the cartridge
is mounted correctly by viewing the status under the Device tab and
External Drive selection of the Management.
Mouse over the intended RDX target and see the three options of
View, Backup, and Restore:
View shows the Status of the RDX cartridge. Backup and Restore
will enter those respective jobs.
4.
From the NAS tab and Local Backup menu item select RDX
Spanning. See that the RDX system that will be used shows Yes
in the Mounted column. This example is using the Embedded
RDX dock of a T5R.
