91. THE VANISHING PENCIL
Show a quarter and say you will make it disappear by waving a pencil over it like a magic wand. But when
the magic happens, the pencil disappears instead!
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Pencil (or pen) and a quarter.
SHOW:
1. Hold the pencil in your right hand with your thumb and first two fingers.
2. Place the quarter in your left palm. Have your spectators stand on your left side. Hold your left hand out
in front of you and use your right hand to tap the pencil against the quarter.
3. Raise your right hand high up each time you tap the quarter. Tell your audience that the quarter will
vanish on the count of three.
4. Bring your right hand up towards your head and bring it down to tap on the quarter as you say “1”, Do
it again on “2”. On “3” raise your right hand up again but leave the pencil behind your right ear before
you bring it down to tap the quarter! It should all happen in one smooth movement, just like the other
movements you made before. As you count “3,” come down with your empty hand and act surprised when
you notice that the quarter is still there but the pencil is gone!
5. Tell your audience you’ll make it reappear…snap your fingers and point to your right ear. It’s back!
92. TELLTALE TEACUP
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Teacup with a handle (as shown in FIGURE 1),
1 penny, 1 nickel, 1 dime, 1 quarter
THE SECRET: Your assistant uses the cup handle to secretly indicate
which coin is placed under the cup.
SECRET SETUP: You'll need someone to be your secret assistant for
this trick. Be sure to teach and practice with them before
performing the trick for other people.
SHOW:
1. State that you can tell what kind of coin is placed under the cup while you are out of the room. Then
leave the room so you cannot see.
2. The audience chooses a coin to put under the cup, and hides the others. In one smooth motion, your
assistant places the cup over the chosen coin, positioning the cup so that its handle points in a certain
direction. The handle direction indicates which coin it is. See FIGURE 1 for the key.
3. Your assistant must be sure to not touch the cup after it's placed, and that no one else touches it either.
4. Come back into the room and look at the cup. Pretend to magically look through the cup, while actually
you look at the handle. Call out what type of coin it is based on the key
93. YOU CAN’T LOSE
Throw a coin in the air and ask, “Will it fall heads or tails?” No one can lose,
because when you catch it, it disappears!
SUPPLIES NEEDED: A coin, jacket or shirt with long sleeves
SHOW: As you throw a coin up with the right hand, stand so your right palm
is toward you and catch the coin in your sleeve. As the coin hits your sleeve,
close your hand as though you had caught it in your hand. Note illustration.
Practice this in front of a mirror and you will be amazed at the effect.
94. HOW YOU CAN ALWAYS WIN
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Dime, Nickel and 5 Pennies
SHOW: This is real trickery, which you can do once for the same audience. Tell them to try to guess
whether the money in your hand is odd or even. Jingle the coins but don’t show them. Have a dime, a
nickel and five pennies. If “even” is called, say you have seven coins. If “odd” is called, say you have
twenty cents.
