71. THE THREE BURGLARS
Three jacks (the burglars) put in different places in a deck end up together each guarded by a King (the
detective)!
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Deck of playing cards
THE SECRET: Before beginning the trick, you secretly place a Jack between two Kings at the bottom of the
deck. As you perform the trick, you place a Jack at the top and bottom of the deck and a King at the top.
When you cut the deck the three Jacks and three Kings come together.
SECRET SETUP: Place a Jack between two Kings at the bottom of the deck. Remove the other three Jacks
from the deck and one other King. Set them beside the deck.
SHOW:
1. Show the audience the three Jacks and the King.
2. Say, “The Jacks represent burglars, the King represents a detective, and the deck represents a house.
Here’s how the story goes: "There were once three burglars who decided to rob a house, so one went in
the front door, (a Jack is placed on the bottom of the deck) another entered the back door, (a Jack goes on
top) and the third went in the window. (The third Jack is pushed into the center of the deck.) The detective,
seeing this, went in the back door also.” (The King is placed on top). The burglars, hearing the detective,
ran around the house. (Cut the deck three times. One cut is really sufficient but additional cuts add to the
effect.) But the detective and his backups caught the burglars, proving that crime doesn’t pay!
3. Fan the deck to show the three burglars in the center each guarded by a detective. The order should be
the following: King, Jack, King, Jack, King, Jack!
72. SPELL IT OUT
Spell out the name of a particular card, dropping one card for each letter, and that chosen card turns up
when the spelling is done!
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Deck of playing cards
THE SECRET: Only specific card names can be spelled out. The cards must be arranged in a certain way
for the trick to work.
SECRET SETUP: Arrange six cards face-up in the following order from front to back: Six of Clubs, Ten of
Hearts, King of Spades, Eight of Hearts, Jack of Diamonds, Eight of Diamonds. Have an assistant memorize
these cards. Place these cards on top of a deck face up. Add nine cards to the top of the deck above the
six cards.
SHOW:
1. Ask your assistant to name a card in the deck. The assistant should choose one of the cards above.
2. Spell out the name of the card putting down one card for each letter. When the last letter is spelled out,
the card that will be face up is the card spelled out!
73. MAGICAL 21
You pick out a chosen card from a group of seven cards by mind reading!
SUPPLIES NEEDED: Deck of playing cards
THE SECRET: You can determine what card was chosen by looking at the fourth card in a pile when that
pile is indicated as having the chosen card.
SHOW:
1. Shuffle the deck and deal 3 piles of seven cards each face up, dealing from left to right. Ask a volunteer
to choose and remember one card without touching it, and to just indicate which PILE it is in.
2. Place that pile between the other two piles and again deal 2 piles of seven cards each. Don't shuffle.
Ask again which pile the chosen card is in. Pick up the pile indicated, always placing it in the middle
between the other two heaps. Deal one more time.
3. This time observe the fourth card of each pile. The chosen card will be one of these cards. Ask the
volunteer again what pile the chosen card is in. Look at the fourth card in that pile. That one is the chosen
card! Pretend to read the volunteer's mind, and name their card.
