ADDITIONAL TRICKS
MIND READING THE COIN
This works best in medium/large groups, try when
out with friends in a bar. For this you need a friend
in on the trick. Line up 9 coins in a square 3x3 on the
table.
Look away and invite someone to pick a coin by
touching it. Next pick their coin by having a friend
place a cup on a placemat corresponding position top
left, top middle, bottom right, middle middle, etc.
For added eect stare into the person’s eyes of whose
mind you are reading. Get a couple of friends in on
the trick to avoid suspicion.
CUP LEVITATION:
EFFECT: The magician announces that they are
going to make an empty cup oat. They release their
grip on the cup and it appears to oat in mid air.
METHOD: Take an empty large paper or styrofoam
cup. Carefully make a hole in one side of the empty
cup, big enough for your thumb to stick through. If
the empty cup is made of styrofoam, you could even
push your thumb straight through it.
Hold the empty cup with both your hands and facing
the audience, announce that you are going to try
and make the cup oat in mid air. Have one thumb
pushed through the nearest side of the cup to you,
out of view of your audience. Then, appear to be
concentrating your mind on the cup and gradually
open up both hands at the same time. While doing

this, push your hands slightly forward as if you are
following the oating up and eventually grab the cup
with both hands. Now, discreetly slip your thumb out
from the side of the cup. This is a simple illusion but it
looks great when done at the right angle. Practice in
front of a mirror to make sure that you get the angles
and the timing right.
MAGIC TOOTHPICK TRICK
EFFECT: The magician shows a pan full of water
with ve toothpicks in the shape of a pentagon. The
magician takes his magic toothpick and dips it in the
center of the pentagon. The ve toothpicks y apart,
breaking the pentagon!
Someone from the audience says…oh, that’s just
what happens when you do that, it’s not magic. The
magician arranges the ve toothpicks back into a
pentagon and hands the person in the audience the
magic toothpick. The person dips it in the center,
nothing happens. It really was magic!
SUPPLIES: a tinfoil pan (a pie plate or leftover
Chinese food plate work well), water, 6 at wooden
toothpicks, the magic ingredient: liquid dishwashing
soap.
BEFORE THE AUDIENCE – PREPARATION:
Dip one of your toothpicks in liquid dishwashing soap.
Set it aside for now. Make sure your pan is clean.
Rinse it well with water. Fill it quite full of water (but
not so full that youre going to spill it.)
IN FRONT OF THE AUDIENCE – PREPARATION:
Arrange the ve SOAPLESS toothpicks in the shape
of a pentagon. Make sure the tips of the toothpicks
overlap so your pentagon stays together. This can be
a bit of a challenge the rst time you do it. So practice
arranging the toothpicks at home a few times rst
and consider arranging them while the audience is
seating itself.
Now, when the audience is settled, let them look at
the pentagon. They may have to stand to do this or
you may want to do the trick on the oor with the
audience around you in a U-shape. Tell the audience
that you’ve arranged the toothpicks into a special ve
sided shape called a pentagon and that youre going
