TheSellerwarrantsitsproductsagainstdefectsinmaterialorworkmanshipforaperiodofone(1)year
fromthedateofmanufacture.TheliabilityoftheSellerislimited,atitsoption,torepair,replaceorissuea
non-casecreditforthepurchasepricesofthegoodswhichareprovidedtobedefective.Thewarrantyand
remediessetforthhereindonotapplytoanygoodsorpartsthereofwhichhavebeensubjectedtomisuse
includinganyuseorapplicationinviolationoftheSeller’sinstructions,neglect,tampering,improperstorage,
incorrectinstallationorservicingnotperformedbytheSeller.InordertopermittheSellertoproperly
administerthewarranty,theBuyershall:1)NotifytheSellerpromptlyofanyclaim,submittingdatecode
informationoranyotherpertinentdataasrequestedbytheSeller.2)PermittheSellertoinspectandtest
theproductclaimedtobedefective.ItemsclaimedtobedefectiveandaredeterminedbySellertobenon-
defectivearesubjecttoa$30.00perhourinspectionfee.ThiswarrantyconstitutestheSeller’ssoleliability
hereunderandisinlieuofanyotherwarrantyexpressed,impliedorstatutory.Unlessotherwisestated
inwriting,Sellermakesnowarrantythatthegoodsdepictedordescribedhereinaretforanyparticular
purpose.

STEP 1:Checktheigniterwireharness.Makesure:
a. Ignitioncabledoesnotcontactwithanymetalsurfaces.
b. Connectionstotheignitionmoduleandtotheigniterorigniter-sensorarecleanandtight.
c. Ignitioncableprovidesgoodelectricalcontinuity.
STEP 2:Checktheignitionsystemgrounding.Nuisanceshutdownsareoftencausedbyapooror
erraticground.
a. Acommongroundisrequiredforthemodule,igniter,amesensorandmainburner.•Checkfor
goodmetal-to-metalcontactbetweentheigniterbracketandthemainburner.
• CheckthegroundpathfromtheGND(BURNER)terminalonthemoduletothemainburner.
Makesuretheconnectionsarecleanandtight.Ifthewireisdamagedordeteriorated,replace
itbyfollowingtheappliancemanufacturerinstructions.Atemporaryleadwireconnection
betweentheGND(BURNER)terminalandthemainburnercanhelpconrmagroundpath
problem.
• Checkthetemperatureattheigniterceramicoramesensorinsulator.Excessivetemperature
permitsleakagetoground.Contacttheappliancemanufacturerifthetemperatureexceeds
theratingoftheigniterorsensor.
• Iftheamesensororbracketisbentoutofposition,restoretothecorrectposition
• Replacetheigniterandsensororignitersensorwithanidenticalunitiftheinsulatoriscracked
STEP 3:Checktheamesensingcircuit.
a.Makesuretheburnerameiscapableofprovidingagoodrecticationsignal.
b.Makesureabout3/4to1in.oftheamesensororigniter-sensoriscontinuouslyimmersedin
theameforthebestamesignal.
c.Checkforexcessive(higherthan1000°F[538°C])temperatureattheceramicinsulatoronthe
amesensor.Excessivetemperaturecancauseashorttoground.
d.Checkforacrackedigniter-sensororasensorceramicinsulator,whichcancauseshortto
ground,andreplaceunitifnecessary.
• Makesuretheelectricalconnectionsarecleanandtight.Replacedamagedwirewith
moisture-resistantNo.18wireratedforcontinuousdutyupto221°F(105°C)
e. IftheigniterisotherthanaNorton201or271,makesureitmeetsthefollowingspecications:
• Ignitermustreach1832°F(1000°C)within34-secondswith102VACapplied
• Ignitermustmaintainatleast500Mohminsulationresistancebetweentheigniterleadwires
andtheignitermountingbracket
• Ignitermustnotdevelopaninsulatinglayeronitssurface(overtime)thatwouldpreventame
sensing
• Ignitersurfaceareaimmersedinamemustnotexceedone-fourthofthegroundedarea
immersediname.Thiswouldpreventamesensing
• Ignitercurrentdrawat130VACmustnotexceed5A
Ignition System Checks
Troubleshooting
ThestatusLEDcanbeusedtoassistwithtroubleshooting.TheLEDshowssystemstatusforthe
currentcallforheatonly.Whenthecallforheatisinterrupted(thermostatsatisedorsystempower
switchedoff),theLEDgoesoffandthestatusinformationislost.
• PulsingisthenormalconditionofthestatusLEDduringacallforheat(24Vterminalispowered).
Thesystemcanbeinanyofthenormaloperatingmodesincludingprepurge,warmup,ignitiontrial,
betweentrialpurge,ornormalrun.
• OneashindicatestheICM283isinanignitionlockoutmode.Thecauseofthisisusuallythe
burnernotlightingornoamedetected.Initiateacallforheatandiftheburnerdoesnotlight,check
the:
–Gassupply
–Inputvoltage
–Hotsurfaceigniter
–Gasvalve
–Wiring
• Ifthemainburnerlights,butgoesoutattheendofignitiontrial,checkthe:
–Igniter/sensor
–Flamerod
–Burnergroundconnections
–Wiring
• Twoashesindicatetheamerecticationsignalisweak.Themostlikelycausesare:
–Contaminatedorincorrectlylocatedigniter/sensororamerod
–Pooramesenseleadwireinsulationorconnections
–Poorgaspressure
Iftheamerecticationsignalisstrongwhentheappliancelights,butweakwhileheatisbeing
delivered,checkforoverheatingoftheigniter/sensor,amerodceramicoramesenseleadwires.
• Threeashesindicateaninternalerror.ThemostprobablecauseisanICM283processorfailure.
Startanewcallforheatandifthethree-ashsignalreturns,replacetheICM283.
Aftertroubleshooting,performthecheckoutprocedureagaintobesurethesystemisoperating
normally.
Gas Leak Test
Coatthegascontrolgasketedgesandallthepipeconnectionsupstreamofthegascontrolwitha
soapandwatersolution.Bubblesindicategasleaks.Tightenthejointsandscrewsorreplacethe
componenttostopagasleak.Repairleakandrecheckwithsoapandwatersolution.
Mode of Operation
TheICM283providesoneorthreetrialsforignition,dependingonwhichdipswitchpositionsare
selected.Oncetheinducerfanairowisestablished,theairprovingswitchclosesandthecycle
begins.
TheICM283initiatesa32-seconddelaytoallowsystemprepurge.Afterprepurge,theICM283
energizestheignitertostarttheigniterwarmup.Themoduleenergizesthehotsurfaceigniterfor
a34-secondwarmupperiodandthegasvalveremainsclosed.Attheendofthewarmupperiod,
thegasvalveopensfortheignitiontrialtimedeterminedbythedipswitch.Thehotsurfaceigniter
stayspoweredforanignitionactivationperiodofonesecond(ifthefour-secondtrialtimeisused)or
fourseconds(iftheseven-secondtrialtimeisused).Theigniterturnsoffaftertheignitionactivation
period.Neartheendoftheignitiontrialtime,theamesensingcircuitdeterminesifthemainburner
islit.Ifameisrecognized,thegasvalveremainsopenandtheburnerruncyclebegins.Whenthe
mainburnerislit,aamerecticationcircuitiscompletedbetweentheamesensor(igniteronlocal
sensesystemsoramerodonremotesensesystems)andthemainburner(burnerground).
TheICM283amesensingcircuitdetectstheamecurrentandkeepsopenthegasvalve.The
mainameismonitoredcontinuouslyduringthecallforheat.Ifameisnotsensedbytheendof
thetimedtrialforignition,thegasvalveclosesandthemodulelocksout.Itmustbemanuallyreset
byremovingpowerorsettingthethermostatbelowtheroomtemperatureforatleast30seconds.If
theburnerlightsandameisprovedbutgoesoutduringtheruncycle,thegasvalveclosesandthe
moduleinitiatesawarmupperiodfollowedbyonetrialforignition.Ifameisnotestablished,thegas
controlclosesandthemodulelocksout,requiringmanualreset.Ifameisnotsensedbytheend
ofthersttimedtrialforignition,thegasvalveclosesandthemoduleinitiatesasecond96seconds
betweentrialpurgecycle,followedbyigniterwarmupandasecondtrialforignition.Ifameisnot
established,thebetweentrialpurge,warmup,trialforignitioncycleisrepeatedathirdtime.Ifame
isstillnotestablishedfollowingthethirdtrial,thegasvalveclosesandthemodulelocksout.Itmust
bemanuallyresetbyremovingpowerorsettingthethermostatbelowtheroomtemperatureforat
least30seconds.Iftheburnergoesoutduringtheruncycle,thegasvalveclosesandthemodule
checksforthenumberofignitiontrialsperformedduringthecurrentcallforheat.Ifthenumberisless
thanthree,themoduleinitiatesabetweentrialpurge,warmupandtrialforignition.Afterthethirdtrial
duringasinglecallforheat,themodulelocksout.Themodulemustbemanuallyresetfollowingthe
lockout.
Start Up – Operation – Safety Check
1. Visual inspection
a. Withpoweroff,makesureallwiringconnectionsarecleanandtight.
b. TurnonthepowertotheapplianceandtheICM283.
c. Openthemanualshutoffvalvesinthegaslinetotheappliance.
d. Testforagasleakupstreamofthegascontrolifpipinghasbeendisturbed.See“GasLeak
Test”above.
2. Check safety lockout operation
a. Turnthethermostatorcontrollertothelowestsetting.
b. Turnonthesystempower.
c. Waitoneminute.
d. Turnoffthegassupply.
e. Setthethermostatorcontrollerabovetheroomtemperaturetocallforheat.
f. Watchforigniterwarmupfollowingprepurge.Igniterstartstoglowseveralsecondsafteritis
powered.
g. DeterminethelengthoftimethegascontrolisenergizedbyconnectinganACvoltmeteracross
thegasvalveterminals.
h. Whenusingathree-trialignitiondipswitchpositionwatchforthestartof96-secondbetween
trialpurge,followedby34-secondigniterwarmupandsecondtryforignition.Afterathird
purge,warmupandtrialforignitionsequence,theICM283shouldlockout.StatusIndicator
LEDwillashonetimewheninalockout.
i. Openthemanualgascontrolknobandmakesurenogasisowingtotheburner.
j. Setthethermostatbelowtheroomtemperatureandwaitoneminutebeforecontinuing.
3: Check normal operation
a. Setthethermostatorcontrollerabovetheroomtemperaturetocallforheat.
b. Observethesequenceandmakesurethemainburnerlightssmoothlywithoutashback.
c. Makesuretheburneroperatessmoothlywithoutoating,lifting,oramerollouttothefurnace
vestibuleorheatbuildupinthevestibule.
d. Testforagasleakdownstreamofthegascontrolifpipinghasbeendisturbed.See“GasLeak
Test”above.
e. Checktheburneramecondition.Theigniter-sensororsensormustbeconstantlyimmersedin
ame.Checktheburneramecondition.Donotrelocatethehotsurfaceigniteroramerod.
f. Turnthethermostatorcontrollerbelowtheroomtemperature.Makesurethemainburnerand
pilotamesgoout.
