TheUniversallyUniqueIdentier(UUID)isa128-bitnumberuniquelyassignedtoyourcomputerat
productionandstoredintheEEPROMofyoursystemboard.Thealgorithmthatgeneratesthenumberis
designedtoprovideuniqueIDsuntiltheyearA.D.3400.Notwocomputersintheworldhavethesame
number.
Whenyoureplacethesystemboard,youmustsettheUUIDonthenewsystemboardbydoingthefollowing:
1.InstalltheLENOVOThinkPadHardwareMaintenanceDisketteVersion1.76orlater,andrestartthe
computer.
2.Fromthemainmenu,select4.AssignUUID.AnewUUIDiscreatedandwritten.IfavalidUUID
alreadyexists,itwillnotbeoverwritten.
ReadingorwritingtheECAinformation
InformationonEngineeringChangeAnnouncements(ECA)isstoredintheEEPROMofthesystemboard.
Theelectronicstorageofthisinformationsimpliestheproceduretocheckifanengineeringchangehas
beenpreviouslyappliedtoacomputer.
Tocheckwhatengineeringchangeshavebeenpreviouslyappliedtothemachine,usetheECAinformation
read/writefunctionontheLENOVOThinkPadHardwareMaintenanceDisketteVersion1.76orlater.
1.InserttheLENOVOThinkPadHardwareMaintenanceDisketteVersion1.76orlater,andrestartthe
computer.
2.Fromthemainmenu,select6.SetECAInformation.
3.T oreadtheECAinformation,select2.ReadECA/reworknumberfromEEPROMandfollowthe
instruction.
4.T oreadtheboxbuilddate,select5.ReadboxbuilddatefromEEPROM,andfollowtheinstructions
onthecomputer.
Afteranengineeringchangeisappliedtothemachine,theEEPROMmustbeupdated.UsetheLENOVO
ThinkPadHardwareMaintenanceDisketteVersion1.76orlatertoupdatetheEEPROM.
Note:OnlytheECAnumberisstoredintheEEPROM.ThemachinetypeoftheECAisassumedtobethe
sameasthemachinetypeofthemachinethathadtheengineeringchangeappliedtoit.

Ifthesystemboardisbeingreplaced,trytoreadtheECAinformationfromtheoldsystemboardandtransfer
theinformationtothenewsystemboard.Ifthesystemboardisinoperable,thiswillnotbepossible.
