CRISP-DM View
By s upporting the Cross-Industry Standard P r ocess f or D ata Mining (CRISP-DM), IBM® SPSS®
Modeler projects provide an industry-proven an d non-proprietary way of organizing the pieces
of your data mining efforts. CRISP-D M uses six phases to describe the process from start
(gather ing business requiremen ts ) to finish (deploying y our results). Even thou gh some phase s
do not typically involve work in SPSS Modeler, the p r oject pane inc ludes all s ix phases so that
you have a central location for storing and tracking all materials associated with the project.
For example, the Business Understanding phase ty pically involves gathering requirements and
meeting with colleag ues to determine goals rather than working with d ata in SPSS Modeler. The
project pane allows you to sto r e your notes from such m eetings in the Business Understanding
folder for future referenc e and inclusi on in reports.

The CRISP-DM view in th e project pane is also equipped with its own Help system to guide you

Note: If the p roject pane is n ot v is ible in the window, click Project on the View menu.
Setting the Default Project Phase
Objects added to a project are added to a default phase of CRISP-DM. This means that you need
to organize objects manually according to the data mining phase in which you used them. It is
wise to se t the default folder to the phase in which you are currently working.
To select which phase to use as your default:
E In CRISP-DM v iew, right-click the folder for the phase to set as the default.
E On the menu, click Set as Default.
The default folder is displaye d in bold type.
