Part 1: Installation and user’s guide This part of the manual consists of an introduction, installation instructions, and instructions for using and maintaining this 12x8x32 CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) drive. Introduction This section describes this option and the software that comes with it. This section also contains some information you will need before you install the option.
In addition to this manual, the option kit includes: v CD-RW drive v Two audio cables v Four mounting screws v one IDE cable v Two bezels3 for use with certain computers v Adaptec Easy CD Creator and DirectCD software disc v Laser Safety Guide for CD-ROMs v Electrical safety booklet Contact your place of purchase if an item is missing or damaged. Be sure to retain your proof of purchase. It might be required to receive warranty service. See Appendix D for warranty information.
System requirements Before you begin installing the drive, be sure your computer meets the following system requirements. ® ® v Minimum microprocessor: Intel Pentium processor (or the equivalent) v Minimum RAM: 32 MB4 v Available IDE connection v Available internal power connection v Available 5.25-in. drive bay v One of the following operating systems: – Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.
Front view of the drive Refer to the following illustrations to identify parts that might be referred to in the installation instructions. 1 CD tray. Use this tray to load and unload a CD. 2 Busy indicator. This light comes on when the drive reads from, writes to, or plays a CD. 3 Manual-eject hole. This hole provides access to the eject mechanism to remove a CD from the drive, when normal procedures do not work. 4 Eject/Load button. When pushed, this button opens or closes the CD tray.
5 DC-power connector. Use this connector to attach the CD-RW drive to the computer power supply cord.
Installing the Drive To install the drive into your computer, use the following steps. Step 1. Opening the computer To open your computer, do the following: 1. Turn off the computer and all attached devices. 2. Unplug the power cords for the computer and all attached devices. 3. Remove the cover from the computer. Step 2. Unpacking the drive To unpack the drive, do the following: 1. In order to discharge any accumulated static electricity, touch an unpainted metal surface for at least two seconds.
v Some non-IBM computers support the cable-select setting, where the position of the device on the cable determines whether a device is master or slave. See the documentation that comes with your computer to determine if your system supports this setting. Step 4. Setting the configuration jumper The following illustration shows the master 1 setting, the slave 2 setting, and the cable-select 3 setting.
with this drive. Using the wrong size screws might damage the drive. Thread the screws in loosely to check their position. Usually two screws are used on each side. 3. Check to make sure the alignment is correct, and then tighten the screws to secure the drive. Do not overtighten. Step 6. Attaching the cables to the drive Connect the cables to the CD-RW drive as follows: 1.
2. Be sure the cables do not interfere with the computer cover and do not block the power-supply fan blades or air-flow paths. 3. Reinstall the computer cover. 4. Reconnect all devices and check any devices that might have become disconnected, such as the keyboard, mouse, and monitor. 5. Connect all power cords to electrical outlets. Step 8. Attaching the bezels This option package includes two bezels that conform to the curved design of some computers.
To install the Easy CD Creator and DirectCD software for Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows Me, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0, do the following steps: 1. Insert the Easy CD Creator and DirectCD disc into your CD-RW drive. 2. If the Adaptec Easy CD Creator Installation window opens, follow the onscreen instructions. If not, continue to the next step. 3. Click Start --> Settings --> Control Panel. 4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
CD Creator is used to copy CDs, create new data CDs, and produce new audio CDs that can be read by standard CD-RO drives and CD players. DirectCD is used to make file archives and data CDs that can be altered many times. It also provides the convenience of direct drive letter access. When used with CD-RW media, DirectCD is very much like using a diskette to store files. If DirectCD is used with CD-R media, you can write and rewrite until the CD is full, and then the data becomes fixed.
Attention: Wiping a CD using a circular motion might cause loss of data. v Handle the CD by the edges or by the center hole. Do not touch the surface of the CD. v To remove dust or fingerprints, wipe the CD from the center to the edge with a soft, lint-free cloth. v Do not write on the surface. v Do not place the CD in direct sunlight. v Do not use commercial cleaners to clean the CD. v Do not bend the CD.
Loading a CD To load a CD into a horizontally mounted CD-RW drive, do the following: 1. Press the Eject/Load button. The tray slides out of the drive. 2. Insert the CD into the loading tray. 3. Close the loading tray by pressing the Eject/Load button, or by gently pushing the tray in. Attention: Do not force the tray to open; do not insert foreign objects into the CD tray. If your tray does not open when you press the Eject/Load button, see “Ejecting a CD manually” on page 1-14.
1. Press the Eject/Load button. 2. Look at the illustrations and compare them to your loading tray. v If your loading tray looks like the left illustration, insert the CD carefully so that the edges of the CD are underneath the tabs on the loading tray. These plastic tabs cover the edges of the CD and hold it in place. The tabs are attached to the tray itself and cannot be moved.
1. Insert a blank disc. The DirectCD Wizard Welcome window opens. 2. Click Next twice. The Format Disc window opens. Attention: Formatting completes in about 30 minutes for standard and about 15 minutes for high speed media.The DirectCD program configures the disc to receive data, verifies the integrity of the disc surface, and writes DirectCD file system structures to the disc. You can do other tasks on your computer while the disc is being formatted. 3. Click Next to continue.
4. The window that opens is similar to the Windows Explorer. In the top section, click to select the audio files or audio tracks you want to add to the CD. 5. Click the Add button at the top of the window to add the files to your CD. 6. Choose the close CD-R disc option if you plan to use it in your car or home players.
Note: This is the drive containing the CD you want to copy. 4. In the Record To section, select the CD-RW drive from the scroll down box. Be sure that there is a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc in the CD-RW drive. 5. On the Advanced tab, you can choose to test the CD for the best possible recording speed. You can also change the number of copies made, or choose to have the CD copied to your hard disk before copying it to the blank CD. These selections will increase the time it takes to copy the CD. 6.

Pour installer UDF reader, procédez comme suit : 1. Sélectionnez Démarrer -->Rechercher -->Fichiers ou Démarrer -->Rechercher -->Répertoires. 2. Recherchez le fichier UDFRINST.EXE sur le disque dur de l’ordinateur. 3. Copiez le fichier UDFRINST.EXE de la liste de fichiers trouvés sur une disquette. 4. Insérez cette dernière dans l’unité de disquette de l’ordinateur avec lequel vous désirez lire les CD DirectCD. 5.
Remarque : Les CD-R sont classés par leur vitesse d’écriture. Pour pouvoir écrire à la vitesse 12x, un CD supportant une vitesse de 12x sera nécessaire. Prenez contact avec le fournisseur du CD pour connaître sa vitesse maximale d’écriture.
v Pour retirer de la poussière ou des traces de doigts, nettoyez le CD à partir du centre en allant vers les bords avec un chiffon doux non pelucheux. v N’écrivez pas sur la surface. v Ne placez pas les CD sous la lumière directe du soleil. v N’utilisez pas de produits du commerce pour nettoyer vos CD. v Ne pliez pas les CD.
Avertissement : Ne tentez pas de forcer l’ouverture du plateau ; ne placez pas d’objets étrangers sur le plateau. Si le plateau ne s’ouvre pas quand vous appuyez sur le bouton Ejection/Chargement, consultez la section «Ejection manuelle d’un CD» à la page 1-14. Pour charger un CD dans une unité de CD-RW montée verticalement, procédez comme suit : 1. Appuyez sur le bouton Ejection/Chargement. 2. Examinez les illustrations et comparez-les avec votre plateau de chargement.
Ejection manuelle d’un CD Si vous appuyez sur le bouton Ejection/Chargement et que le plateau ne sort pas, mettez l’ordinateur hors tension. Dépliez un grand trombone, comme le montre l’illustration. L’extrémité dépliée doit mesurer au moins 45 mm. Insérez l’extrémité dépliée dans l’encoche d’éjection manuelle située sur la face avant de l’unité (voir «Vue de la face avant de l’unité» à la page 1-4). Poussez le trombone dans l’encoche jusqu’à ce que le plateau sorte.
4. Indiquez le titre de votre disque dans la fenêtre Name Your Disc (nom du disque). Le nom du disque peut comprendre jusqu’à 11 caractères. 5. Si vous prévoyez d’utiliser un logiciel de compression avec ce disque, cliquez sur la case à cocher en regard du message Enable compression on this disc (activation de la compression sur ce disque). 6. Pour sauvegarder (copier) un CD à l’aide de votre unité de CD-RW, procédez comme suit : 1. Cliquez sur Démarrer -->Programmes -->Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 -->Features-->CD Copier (copieur de CD). La fenêtre CD Copier s’affiche. 2. S’il y a lieu, cliquez sur l’onglet Source and Destination (source et destination) pour afficher la page correspondante. 3. Dans la section Copy From (copie à partir de), sélectionnez l’unité source dans la liste déroulante.

Troubleshooting Your computer or CD-RW drive does not operate correctly or the busy indicator light does not come on. Take the following actions: 1.
a hard disk drive, attach it to the connector at the other end of the cable and attach the CD-RW drive to the middle connector. You cannot format a CD-RW disc Take the following actions: 1. Verify that your computer has the latest level IDE CD-ROM device driver for your CD-ROM drive. Refer to the documentation for your computer or your CD-ROM drive to determine which device driver file to look for. 2. Verify that your system has the latest level IDE controller device driver.
You cannot read from the CD after successfully writing to it. Take the following actions: 1. If you can read the CD in another CD player or you can see previous sessions, the directory information might be damaged on the volume, making it unreadable. Check the Adaptec software online user’s guide for more troubleshooting ideas. 2. You might have a damaged CD-R or CD-RW disc. Try a new CD-R disc or CD-RW disc, or another brand of disc. 3.
b. Select CD-RW from the Device Manager list. Verify that there is a CD-RW device and that no conflicts exist. The device status will indicate that the device is working properly. 6. Click OK. 7. Restart the computer. If the device icon is still not present, check cable connections, device jumper settings, and resolve any existing conflicts. The CD cannot be read.
