Chapter4.Turningonandturningofftheserver
Thischapterprovidesinformationaboutturningonandturningofftheserver.
Turningontheserver
Theservercanbeturnedoninoneofthefollowingways:
•Afteryounishunpackingandsettinguptheserver,connectittoanacpowersource.Pressthepower
switchonthefrontpaneltoturnontheserver.See“Frontpanel”onpage17.Theserverneedsabout
30secondsfortheBMCtoinitializewheneveryouconnecttheservertoanacpowersource.Ifyou
pressthepowerswitchonthefrontpanelduringthisperiod,theserverwillnotstartimmediately;itwill
startaftertheBMCinitializationnishes.
•WhentheWakeonLANfeatureisenabledontheserverthatisconnectedtoanacpowersourceanda
LAN,anetworkadministratorcanremotelyturnonorwakeuptheserverfromamanagementconsole
usingremotenetworkmanagementsoftware.
•YoucanalsousetherelatedBMCfeaturetoremotelyturnontheserverthroughthemanagementLAN.
Turningofftheserver
CAUTION:
Thepowercontrolbuttononthedeviceandthepowerswitchonthepowersupplydonotturnoff
theelectricalcurrentsuppliedtothedevice.Thedevicealsomighthavemorethanonepower
cord.Toremoveallelectricalcurrentfromthedevice,ensurethatallpowercordsaredisconnected
fromthepowersource.
Theservercanbeturnedoffinoneofthefollowingways:
•Turnofftheserverfromtheoperatingsystemifyouroperatingsystemsupportsthisfeature.Afteran
orderlyshutdownoftheoperatingsystem,theserverwillturnoffautomatically.Forinstructionsonhow
toshutdownyourspecicoperatingsystem,refertotherelateddocumentationorhelpsystemfor
theoperatingsystem.
•Pressthepowerswitchonthefrontpaneltostartanorderlyshutdownoftheoperatingsystemandturn
offtheserver,ifyouroperatingsystemsupportsthisfeature.
•Ifyourserverstopsrespondingandyoucannotturnitoff,pressandholdthepowerswitchonthe
frontpanelforfoursecondsormore.Ifyoustillcannotturnofftheserver,disconnectallpowercords
fromtheserver.
•IftheserverisconnectedtoaLAN,anetworkadministratorcanremotelyturnofftheserverfroma
managementconsoleusingremotenetworkmanagementsoftware.
•YoucanalsousetherelatedBMCfeaturetoremotelyturnofftheserverthroughthemanagementLAN.
•Theservermightbeturnedoffasanautomaticresponsetoacriticalsystemfailure.
Notes:
1.Whenyouturnofftheserverandleaveitconnectedtoanacpowersource,theservercanalsorespond
toaremoterequesttoturnontheserver.Toremoveallpowerfromtheserver,youmustdisconnect
theserverfromtheacpowersource.
