Preparing the Fan Site Step 1 - Choose the Fan Site Proper ceiling fan location and attachment to the building structure are essential for safety, reliable operation, maximum efficiency, and energy savings. Choose a fan site where: • No object can come in contact with the rotating fan blades during normal operation. • e fan blades are at least 7 feet above the floor and the ceiling is at least 8 feet high.
Preparing the Fan Site (continued) Step 2 - Cut the Ceiling Hole 2-1. Locate the site for the ceiling hole directly below the joist or support brace that will hold the outlet box and fan. 2-2. Cut a 4” diameter hole through the drywall or plaster of the ceiling. You will use the hole to install the support brace and outlet box. Step 3 - Install a Support Brace, If Necessary Determine if there is a ceiling joist directly above the ceiling hole.
Installer’s Choice and Optional Accessories Understanding Mounting and Installer’s Choice® Support Brace Standard Mounting Style Ceiling Outlet Box Hunter’s patented 3-position mounting system provides you maximum installation flexibility and ease. You can install your Hunter fan in one of three ways, depending on ceiling height and your preference: Low Profile, Standard, or Angled mounting. The steps in this manual include instructions for all three Installer’s Choice mounting methods.
1 • Getting Ready To install a ceiling fan, be sure you can do the following: • Locate the ceiling joist or other suitable support in ceiling. • Drill holes for and install wood screws. • Identify and connect electrical wires. • Lift 40 pounds. If you need help installing the fan, your Hunter fan dealer can direct you to a licensed installer or electrician.
2 • Installing the Ceiling Plate CAUTION: To avoid possible electrical shock, before installing your fan, disconnect the power by turning off the circuit breakers to the outlet box and associated wall switch location. If you cannot lock the circuit breakers in the off position, securely fasten a prominent warning device, such as a tag, to the service panel. 2-1. Drill two pilot holes into the wood support structure through the outermost holes in the outlet box. The pilot holes should be 9/64” in diameter.
3 • Assembling and Hanging the Fan WARNING: Fan may fall if not assembled as directed in these installation instructions. 3-1. Unbundle the wires from the fan. For Standard or Angled mounting: 3-2. Insert the downrod through the canopy and canopy trim ring. Feed the wires from the fan through the downrod on one side of the pin in the ball. 3-3. Loosen the square head setscrew on the adapter to install the pipe and ball assembly.
4 • Securing Fan to Secondary Support System 4.1. Find the looped end of the braided cable and insert it through the ceiling plate and one of the holes in the outlet box into the ceiling. 4.2. Access the support brace in the ceiling. You may not be able to do this from below the ceiling depending on your installation site. 4.3. Drive a wood screw and washer into the side of the brace that holds the outlet box. Leave 3 mm (1/8”) of space between the support brace and the washer. 4.4.
5 • Wiring the Fan All wiring must be in accordance with national and local electrical codes and ANSI/NFPA 70. If you are unfamiliar with wiring, use a qualified electrician. Wall switches are not included. Select an acceptable general-use switch in accordance with national and local electrical codes. 5-1. Before attempting installation, make sure the power is still off. 5-2. To connect the wires, hold the bare metal leads together and place a wire connector over them, then twist clockwise until tight.
6 • Installing the Canopy and Canopy Trim Ring WARNING: Failure to complete the following steps could cause the fan to fall. Note: It is recommended you use a magnetic tip screwdriver for the following steps. 6-1. Rotate the hanger ball so the tab in the canopy is secure in the hanger ball groove. Note: Your fan may have multiple tabs and grooves that must be aligned. 6-2. Swing the fan up to align the canopy screw holes with the mounting holes on the ceiling plate.
7 • Assembling the Blades Our blade assembly enables you to lock the blades in place without tools and to remove the blades easily for cleaning. Blade Step 7-1 7-1. Align the three holes in the blade with the three blade iron posts. 7-2. Using two hands, squeeze the blade and blade iron together with your thumbs under the blade iron and your fingers on top of the blade. You will feel the blade lock into place. 7-3.
8 • Completing Your Installation With a Multi Staked Light Fixture Upper Switch Housing Housing Assembly Screw WARNING: Use only the light fixture supplied with this fan model. 8-1. To attach the lower switch housing assembly to the fan, partially install two housing assembly screws into the upper switch housing. 8-2. Connect the upper plug connector from the motor to the lower plug connector in the lower switch housing assembly.
8 • Completing Your Installation With a Multi Staked Light Fixture (continued) Note: Glass shade style and number of lights may vary. 7-6. To install each shade, first loosen the three thumbscrews. 7-7. Raise the shade to the light fixture. Tighten the thumbscrews securely. 7-8. Install B10 candelabra-based light bulbs (40 Watt maximum each).
9 • Operating and Cleaning Your Ceiling Fan 9-1. Turn on electrical power to the fan. 9-2. The fan pull chain controls power to the fan. The pull chain has four settings in sequence: High, Medium, Low, and Off. • Pull the chain slowly to change settings. • Release slowly to prevent the chain from recoiling into the blades. • The chain uses a breakaway connector that separates if the chain is jerked. If this happens, simply reinsert the chain into the connector. 9-3.
10 • Troubleshooting Problem: Nothing happens; fan does not move 1. Turn power on, replace fuse, or reset breaker. 2. Loosen canopy, check all connections according to the wiring the fan section. 3. Check the plug connection in the switch housing. 4. Push motor reversing switch firmly left or right to ensure that the switch is engaged. 5. Pull the pull chain to ensure it is on. 6. Remove the shipping bumpers. Problem: Noisy operation 1.
