Basics 15 Back cover Removing the back cover Remove the back cover to access the battery compartment and SIM card slot. 1. With the phone turned off, hold your phone securely with the front facing down. . With your thumb or finger, lift up the back cover from the small notch at the top of the phone. Replacing the back cover 1. Secure the bottom part of the back cover first by aligning the tabs on the back cover into the openings located inside the battery compartment. .
16 Basics Battery Your phone uses a rechargeable battery. Please use only original batteries and accessories that came with your phone or replacements that we recommend. How long the battery can last before it needs recharging depends on how you use your phone. Among these are the phone features and accessories you use (for example, leaving your Bluetooth connection always on uses more power). Long phone calls and frequent web browsing use up much battery power.
Basics 17 Removing the battery 1. Take the back cover off. See “Removing the back cover”. . Lift the battery from the groove at the upper left side of the battery compartment to remove the battery. Charging the battery The battery is partially charged when shipped. Before you turn on and start using your phone, it is recommended that you charge the battery. Some batteries perform best after several full charge/ discharge cycles.
18 Basics 1. Connect the bigger end of the USB cable to the power adapter. . Connect the smaller end of the USB cable to the phone. . Plug in the power adapter to an electrical outlet to start charging the battery. Your phone may turn on when the battery is being charged. As the battery is being charged, the notification LED shows a solid red light when the battery is being charged. The light turns to solid green when the phone is fully charged.
Basics 19 Switching your phone on or off Switching your phone on Press the POWER button. Easy. When you turn on the phone for the first time, you’ll need to set it up. Go to “Setting up your phone for the first time” and we’ll take you through it. Switching your phone off 1. If the display is off, press the POWER button to turn it back on. . Unlock your phone if the Lock screen is displayed. See “Unlocking the screen” in the Getting started chapter. .
20 Basics Finger gestures Tap When you want to type using the keyboard, select items onscreen such as apps and settings, or press onscreen buttons, simply tap them with your finger. Press and hold To open the available options for an item (e.g. contact or link in a web page), simply press and hold the item. Swipe or slide To swipe or slide means to quickly drag your finger vertically or horizontally across the screen. Drag Press and hold your finger with some pressure before you start to drag.
Getting started Setting up your phone for the first time When you switch on your phone for the first time, you’ll be asked to set some options such as your time zone and your Window Live ID. Just follow the onscreen instructions and you’ll be up and running with your phone in no time. Start screen Up front on the Start screen, you get to see at a glance Windows® Phone live tiles that continuously update and show what’s most personal to you.
22 Getting started Rearranging the tiles on the Start screen 1. Press and hold the tile you want to move until it floats. . Drag the tile to the position where you want to place it. Pause at the top or bottom edge of the screen to drag the tile to the extended Start screen. . When the tile is where you want it, tap the tile to dock it. Pinning items to the Start screen You can pin just about anything you want to the Start screen: apps, pictures, songs, shortcuts, and even contacts.
Getting started 23 Hubs Simplify your everyday tasks with hubs. Instead of going in and out of various apps, hubs simplify things by tying together related experiences. For example, in the People Hub, not only can you see all your contacts but you can also check status updates from your Facebook friends. Check out the other cool hubs on your phone such as Office, Pictures, Music + Videos, and more.
24 Getting started Switching to Sleep mode Press the POWER button to turn off the display and switch your phone to Sleep mode. Your phone also automatically goes into Sleep mode when it’s idle for a while. Waking up from Sleep mode Your phone automatically wakes up when you have an incoming call. To wake it up manually, press the POWER button. You’ll need to unlock the screen.
Getting started 25 Changing your lock screen wallpaper Browse the collection of wallpapers available on your phone or choose from photos that you have taken with the camera. 1. On the Start screen, tap . . Tap Settings > lock & wallpaper > change wallpaper. . Choose whether to select from preset wallpapers, camera photos, or a photo album. 4. Select the photo you want to use as your lock screen wallpaper. 5. If the photo you selected is bigger than the allowable wallpaper size, crop the photo first.
26 Getting started Status icons You can tell a lot about your phone by checking the icons in its status bar. Simply tap the top of the screen to show the status icons. The status icons disappear after a few seconds.
Getting started 27 Adjusting the volume Press the VOLUME UP or VOLUME DOWN button to adjust the volume to your desired level. The volume bar appears on top of the screen and shows the volume level. On the volume bar, tap the icon on the right to quickly switch to ring or vibrate. If you want to have silent as an option, you need to turn off vibrate on your phone. See “Changing sound settings” in the Settings chapter to find out how to turn off vibrate. Searching Searching the Web 1.
28 Getting started Searching within an app In some apps like People, Maps, and Marketplace, you can do a search within those apps. Simply open the app, and then press SEARCH. Interacting with your phone by speaking From anywhere on your phone, press and hold START to bring up Speech, which lets you use your voice to call people, start apps, and search the web. To make a phone call, you’d say “Call Jennifer Singer, mobile”. To start an app, like Calendar, say “Open Calendar”.
Getting started 29 Changing the ringtone Choose from the available selections of ringtones on your phone. 1. On the Start screen, tap . . Tap Settings > ringtones & sounds. . Tap the Ringtone box. 4. Listen to a ringtone by tapping the play icon beside its name. 5. Tap the name of the ringtone that you want to use. Changing the theme Feeling a little blue? You can change the theme of your phone to match your mood for the day. 1. On the Start screen, tap . . Tap Settings > theme. .
Phone calls Making calls 1. On the Start screen, tap the Phone tile. . Tap . . Dial the number you want to call, and then tap call. Making an emergency call On the phone dialer screen, dial the international emergency number for your locale (for example, 911), and then tap call. Receiving calls When you receive a phone call from a contact, the Incoming call screen appears and displays the caller ID icon, name, and phone number of the calling party.

Display is off When the lock screen appears, slide up from the bottom of the lock screen, and then tap answer. 32 Phone calls Using in-call options When a call is in progress, use the buttons onscreen to mute or unmute the microphone or to turn on or off the speakerphone. You can also press MENU and choose whether to add a call, place the call on hold, mute the microphone, and more. Putting a call on hold 1. Tap . . Tap hold. Tap hold again to resume the call. Switching between calls If you’re already on a call and accept another call, you can choose to switch between the two calls. 1.
Phone calls 33 1. Make a call to the first conference call participant. 2. When connected, tap , and then tap add call, and then dial the number of the second participant. The first participant is put on hold when you dial the second participant. 3. When connected to the second participant, tap merge calls. 4. To add another participant to the conference call, tap add call, and then dial the number of the contact you want to invite to the conference call. 5.
34 Phone calls Using call history Use the call history to check missed calls, your dialed numbers and received calls. Checking calls in the call history 1. On the Start screen, tap the Phone tile. . Tap a name or number in the list to go to a screen where you can select to call the number, view the contact information (if the number is stored in your contacts list), save the contact information (if the number is not stored in your contacts list), or send a text message.
Phone calls 35 Clearing the call history list On the call history screen, you can do the following: To remove a name or number from the list, press and hold it, and then tap delete item. To clear the entire list, tap ... , and then tap delete all. Global Phone Global Phone offers you reliable, consistent voice service at home and abroad. 36 Phone calls 3. Remove the new SIM Card from its packaging. 4. Insert the SIM card with its gold contacts facing down and its cut-off corner facing out and slide the SIM card all the way in. 5. Insert the battery so that the metal contacts on the battery align with the metal contacts on your phone. See the Basics chapter for more information. 6. Replace the back cover. Phone calls 37 Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Card is a small rectangular plastic card that stores your phone number and other important information. Do not bend or scratch your SIM Card. Avoid exposing your SIM Card to static electricity, water or dirt. If your SIM Card is lost or damaged while in the U.S., please dial *611 from your Verizon Wireless device or 1-800-922-0204 from any phone to speak with a Customer Service Representative. From outside of the U.S.
38 Phone calls Call services Your phone can directly link to the mobile phone network, and enable you to access and change the settings of various phone services for your phone. Call services may include call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, and more. Contact Verizon to find out about the availability of call services for your phone. To open call services, tap the Phone tile on the Start screen, tap ... , and then tap call settings. My phone number Displays your phone number.
Phone calls 39 Turning Flight mode (Airplane mode) on or off In many countries, you are required by law to turn off the phone while on board an aircraft. A way to turn off the phone function is to switch your phone to Flight mode (Airplane mode). When you enable Flight mode, all wireless radios on your phone are turned off, including the call function, data services, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. 1. On the Start screen, tap . . Tap Settings > airplane mode. . Tap the Status switch to turn it on or off.
People About the People hub When you set up your email and other accounts on your phone, your contacts are imported automatically into your People hub. You’ll be able to see contacts from your Windows Live and Facebook accounts, as well as other email accounts like Google. Your friends’ Windows Live and Facebook feeds also appear in your People hub. Their photos show up in your Pictures hub, and your own feeds pop up in your Me tile.
People 41 If you’re signed in to your Windows Live and/or Facebook accounts, swipe to the left to see updates from your friends. If you signed in to your Windows Live account when you first set up the phone, your contacts from those accounts will appear in the contacts list when you first open People. Contact information When you tap a contact on the People hub, the profile screen opens, showing you the person’s contact details.
42 People Adding a new contact 1. On the Start screen, tap the People tile. . In all of the People hub, tap . . Select the Account, for example Windows Live. This determines which account the contact will sync with. 4. Enter information by tapping an item. 5. Tap when you’re done.
People 43 Importing contacts from your SIM card 1. On the Start screen, tap the People tile. . In all of the People hub, tap import SIM contacts. If you have an account already set up, press and hold people on top of the screen, and then tap settings. . Choose how you want to sort and display the contacts, and then tap import sim contacts.
44 People Breaking the contact information link between contacts 1. On the Start screen, tap the People tile. . In all of the People hub, tap the name of the contact whose contact information link you want to break. . At the bottom of the screen, tap the link icon. The link icon will show how many contacts are linked. 4. Tap one of the linked profiles, and then tap unlink. Editing, searching, and deleting Editing a contact’s information 1. On the Start screen, tap the People tile. .
People 45 Searching for a contact 1. On the Start screen, tap the People tile. . Press SEARCH. . In the search bar, enter the first few letters of the first or last name of the contact you are looking for. Matching contacts are displayed. 4. Tap the contact to open his or her contact details screen. See “Contact information” in this chapter for details. Looking for your contacts that start with the letter M? Tap the letter box, , to go to a particular letter on your contacts list.
46 People Your Me tile When you sign in to your Windows Live and/or Facebook account, your Me tile is automatically created on the Start screen. Tap your Me tile on the Start screen (or in all of the People hub) and check status updates you have posted, comments you have received, and pics that you have uploaded to your Windows Live and/or Facebook accounts. While on the Me screen, you can tap: Your status message to the right of your photo to post a new status message. Your photo to change it.
Keyboard Using the onscreen keyboard When you start an app or select a box that requires text or numbers, the onscreen keyboard becomes available. After entering your text, press BACK to close the keyboard. To open and use it again, tap a text box. Entering text Depending on the app you’re in, you may see a slightly different keyboard layout. Use the following keys while entering text: Some keys have multiple characters or accents associated with them.
48 Keyboard This is the Enter key. Tap to create a new line. This is the Backspace key. Tap to delete the previous character. This is the Smiley key (Only available when writing an a text or picture message). Tap to enter smileys. Moving the cursor 1. While entering text, press and hold the text box. A floating cursor appears . . Drag the cursor to the position that you want, and then release your finger.
Keyboard 49 Enabling other keyboard languages You can choose to show other keyboard languages on the keyboard. The availability of this feature and the languages available to choose from may depend on the version of phone you have. 1. . . 4. On the Start screen, tap . Tap Settings > keyboard. Tap the Keyboard languages box. Select the keyboard languages you want to show, and then tap . Entering words with predictive text The keyboard has predictive text to help you type quickly and accurately.
Messaging About Messaging Keep in touch with important people in your life. Use the Messaging application to compose and send text and picture messages. On the Start screen, tap the Messaging tile. On the conversations screen, all your sent and received messages are neatly grouped into conversations, by contact name or phone number. You can: Scroll up or down the list of conversations by swiping your finger on the screen. Tap a contact name or number to view the exchange of messages.
Messaging 51 Sending a text message If you exceed the limit on the number of characters for a single text message, your text message will be delivered as one but will be billed as more than one message. 1. On the Start screen, tap the Messaging tile. . On the conversations screen, tap . . Fill in one or more recipients. You can: Enter complete phone numbers directly in the To field. Use the semicolon to separate recipients. Enter the first few letters of a contact name.

Messaging 53 Viewing and replying to a message When you receive a new message, the phone plays an alert sound (if set) and displays the message briefly at the top of the screen. 1. 56 Email Checking your inbox After you set up an email account, a new tile is created on the Start screen for that account. To open an email account, tap its tile on the Start screen. If you don’t see the tile, tap the arrow on the Start screen, and then tap the account in the apps list. Slide your finger left or right to check only your unread, flagged, or urgent email.

Calendar About Calendar Use your phone’s Calendar to create and manage your appointments. You can also set up your phone to stay in sync with the following types of calendars: On your phone, sign in to your Windows Live account so you’ll be able to sync your phone’s Calendar with your Windows Live Calendar online. If you haven’t signed in to your Windows Live account yet, see the Getting started chapter to find out how to sign in.
62 Calendar Creating a calendar appointment You can create appointments that appear on your phone only, or appointments that sync with your online account calendars such as in Windows Live or Exchange Server. 1. On the Start screen, tap the Calendar tile. . In day or agenda view, tap . . If you have more than one calendar, select an Account in which to add the appointment: 4. Calendar 63 Sending an invitation You can use Calendar to schedule a meeting or an appointment and invite people to attend it. An invitation email will be sent to them from the account that you choose. 1. Open Calendar and create a new appointment. For the steps, see “Creating a calendar appointment”. . Add details, such as date and time, location, and more. Remember to choose the Account to use for sending the invitation email . Tap more details, scroll down the screen, and then tap add someone. 4.
64 Calendar Changing calendar views When you open Calendar, it displays the day view by default. You can also display the Calendar in agenda or month view. Day and Agenda views Day view displays a list of the appointments of one day. Agenda view lists all your appointments in chronological order. The color bars on the right side of the appointments in Agenda view indicate the type of calendar in which the appointments are part of. To find out what each color represents, tap ... , and then tap calendars.
Calendar 65 Viewing, editing or deleting an appointment You can view, edit, or delete appointments you’ve created. Viewing the details of an appointment 1. 66 Calendar Viewing, dismissing, or snoozing appointment reminders If you have set a reminder for an appointment, your phone will play the alert sound and display a reminder message about the upcoming appointment. On the reminder message, tap snooze to snooze or tap dismiss to dismiss the appointment reminder. Getting connected Data connection Your phone will be automatically set up to use Verizon’s data connection when you turn on your phone for the first time. Adding an access point Before you add a new data connection on your phone, obtain the access point name and settings (including username and password if required) from Verizon . 1. Getting connected 69 Enabling data roaming Data roaming lets you connect to Verizon’s partner networks and access data services when you are out of Verizon’s coverage area. Using data services while roaming will be costly. Check with Verizon for data roaming rates before you use data roaming. 1. On the Start screen, tap . . Tap Settings > cellular. . 70 Getting connected Wi-Fi To use Wi-Fi on your phone, you need access to a wireless access point or “hotspot”. The availability and strength of the Wi-Fi signal will vary depending on objects, such as buildings or simply a wall between rooms, the Wi-Fi signal has to pass through. Turning Wi-Fi on and connecting to a wireless network 1. On the Start screen, tap . . Tap Settings > Wi-Fi. . Tap the On/Off switch to turn it on.

Opening the browser On the Start screen, tap the Internet Explorer tile to start surfing the Web. Going to a web page 1. On the browser screen, tap the URL box on top of the screen. . 72 Getting connected Browsing full versions of all web sites Some web sites display a mobile version of their pages on phone web browsers. You can choose to view the full version of all pages, even for these sites. From the browser screen, while holding the phone in portrait orientation, tap ... , tap settings, and then select Desktop version. Navigating on a web page You can swipe your finger on the screen to navigate and view other areas of the web page.

76 Getting connected Bluetooth Turning Bluetooth on Turning Bluetooth on also makes the phone discoverable. 1. On the Start screen, tap . . Tap Settings > Bluetooth. . Tap the On/Off switch. Your device is automatically made discoverable, and searches for Bluetooth devices within range. Turn off Bluetooth when not in use to conserve battery power, or in places where using a wireless device is prohibited, such as on board an aircraft and in hospitals.
Getting connected 77 Connecting a Bluetooth headset or car kit You can listen to music over a Bluetooth stereo headset, or have hands-free conversations using a compatible Bluetooth headset or car kit. Before you connect your headset, you need to make it discoverable so your phone can find it.

After the call ends, you’ll be able to use the flash again. If you have set the flash to Flash on, it turns back on after you answer and end the call.
