2. The HTC Touch™ Front panel Notification LEDs Earpiece Listen to a phone call from here. Left LED: Shows Green and Amber lights for CDMA standby, message, and network status as well as for notification and battery charging status. Right LED: Shows a flashing Blue light when the Bluetooth system is powered up and ready to transmit Bluetooth radio signal, or an Amber light for GPS status. Touch Screen TALK Press to answer an incoming call or dial a number.

Press the Send/End button to pick up a call or put a call on hold; press and hold the button to end the call.
3. Getting Ready Install and charge the battery New batteries are shipped partially charged. Before you start using your HTC Touch™, it is recommended that you install and charge the battery. To install the battery 1. Slide the back cover upward to remove it. (See figure 1.) 2. Insert the battery by inserting it with its exposed copper part aligned with the protruding copper conductor on the upper right side of the battery compartment.
To charge the battery Some batteries perform best after several full charge/discharge cycles. You can charge the battery in one of the following ways: • Connect your HTC Touch™ directly to an electrical outlet using the AC adapter. • Plug the sync cable to the USB port on your PC and to the sync connector on your HTC Touch™. Charging is indicated by a solid amber light on the LED indicator. When power is on, a charging icon ( ) also appears on the Today screen.
Check the battery power Tap Start > Settings > Systems tab > Power. The Power Settings screen will then open where you can see the current battery power level. When the battery power gets very low, a warning message will be displayed. When you see this, immediately save your data by synchronizing with your PC, or save your data on a secondary storage card, and then turn off your HTC Touch™. Do not attempt to restart your HTC Touch™ until you have connected it with the power adapter.
When to use the splitter adapter Use the supplied Splitter Adapter when you want to charge the battery on your HTC Touch™, and at the same time, use the supplied mini-USB stereo headset for hands-free conversation or for listening to music. 1. Connect the Splitter Adapter to the device’s Sync connector. 2. Connect the AC adapter to the splitter adapter’s power connector. 3. Connect the supplied USB stereo headset to the splitter adapter’s audio connector.
4. The Today Screen The Today screen displays important information, such as upcoming appointments and status indicators. You can tap a section on the screen to open the associated program. • To access the Today screen, tap Start > Today. • To customize the Today screen display, including the background image, tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Today. Status Indicators The Today screen displays important information, such as upcoming appointments and status indicators.
Icons that appear in this area There are more notifications. Tap the icon to view all.
The Start Menu Open a recently-used program. The Start menu, located at the top left corner of the Today screen, displays a list of programs. You can start a program by scrolling through the programs list and then pressing ENTER, or by tapping a program with the stylus. Switch to the Today screen. Open a program. (The items displayed in the Start menu can be customized by tapping Start > Settings > Personal tab > Menus.) Access more programs. View and change settings.
HTC Home HTC Home is a Today screen plug-in that gives you up-to-date local information at a glance, such as time, day and weather information, and shows new messages and missed calls. It also has a customizable launcher where you can add your favorite applications for one-touch access. HTC Home has four components: Home, Weather, Launcher, and Sound. At the bottom of HTC Home, there is a toolbar that allows you to switch between these components.
5. TouchFLO™ TouchFLO™ is a special feature that gives you better touch panel experience on your HTC Touch™. With TouchFLO, you can simply use your finger to scroll and pan the screen. TouchFLO also features Touch Cube where you can launch messaging programs, Internet Explorer® Mobile, and more. You can also add your favorite contacts, play music, and access your pictures and videos. Note Touch Cube is displayed in portrait view only.
Touch Cube • To open Touch Cube, slide your finger upward, starting from the logo at the bottom of the touch screen. • To close Touch Cube, slide your finger downward. • Touch Cube is a three-dimensional, cubic user interface. To flip the interface from one side to another, slide your finger left or right on the touch screen.
6. Making a Call Like a standard mobile phone, you can use your HTC Touch™ to make, receive, and keep track of phone calls and send text messages (SMS). The Phone screen From the Phone screen, you can access Call History, Speed Dial, and Phone settings. To open the Phone screen, do one of the following: • Tap Start > Phone. • Press TALK on the device. Make a call from the Phone screen Phone screen 1.
7. Entering Information When you start a program or select a field that requires text or numbers, the Input Panel icon becomes available on the menu bar. Tap the Input Selector arrow (that appears next to the Input Panel icon) to open a menu where you can select a text input method and customize input options. Use the On-screen Keyboard The on-screen Keyboard is available when text entry is possible. You can enter text by tapping keys on the keyboard that are displayed on the screen.
Use Touch Keypad or Touch Keyboard Touch Keypad simulates a wireless phone keypad on the touch screen to allow you to enter text, numbers, and symbols just as if you were using a wireless phone keypad. Touch Keyboard simulates a 20-key QWERTY (typewriter) keyboard on the touch screen to allow you to enter text, numbers, and symbols similar to the way you would using a QWERTY keyboard.
8. Text Messages Compose and send a text message 1. Tap Start > Messaging > Text Messages. 2. Tap Menu > New. 3. Enter the mobile phone number of one or more recipients, separating them with a semicolon. To access mobile phone numbers from Contacts, tap To. 4. Enter your message. • To quickly add common messages, tap Menu > My Text and tap a desired message. • To check the spelling, tap Menu > Spell Check. 5. Tap Send.
9. E-mail Windows Mobile’s E-mail Setup Wizard lets you easily set up your personal and work e-mail accounts. You can add an e-mail account from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or other e-mail provider as well as Web-based accounts such as Gmail®, Yahoo!® Mail Plus, AOL®, etc. Set up Outlook e-mail To be able to send and receive Outlook e-mail on your HTC Touch™, you must set up ActiveSync synchronization with your computer or the Exchange Server.
5. Enter your login name if it does not show automatically in the User name field. Also enter your password, and select the Save password check box. Tap Next. 6. At this point, e-mail setup is complete. In the Automatic Send/Receive list, choose how frequent you want e-mail messages to be automatically sent and downloaded on the device. When you are finished, tap Finish. Compose and send e-mail 1. Tap Start > Messaging. 2. On the Account Picker screen, select an e-mail account. 3. Tap Menu > New. 4.
10. Synchronizing Outlook Information To synchronize Outlook e-mails and other information between your HTC Touch™ and your PC, use Windows Mobile Device Center if you have a Windows Vista® PC or use ActiveSync if you have Windows XP®. Set up Windows Mobile Device Center for Windows Vista® Microsoft Windows Mobile® Device Center is the replacement for Microsoft® ActiveSync® on Windows Vista®.
Set up ActiveSync for Windows XP The Getting Started Disc that comes with your HTC Touch™ contains Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 or later. Follow the steps below to install and set up ActiveSync on Windows XP or other compatible Windows systems. Note For a list of compatible Windows systems, please go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/activesync45.mspx 1. Insert the Getting Started Disc into the disc drive on your PC. 2.
11. Browsing the Internet Internet Explorer Mobile is a full-featured Internet browser, and optimized for use on your HTC Touch™. 1. Tap Start > Internet Explorer. 2. To go to a Web site, enter the URL address of the desired Web site in the address bar that appears at the top of the screen. Tap the down arrow ( ) to choose one Web site from previously entered addresses. 3. Tap the Go icon ( ) to go to the Web address you entered. 4. Tap Back to go back to the previous page. 5.
12. Using the Camera Taking photos and recording video clips along with audio is easy with the device’s built-in camera. Launch the camera Do one of the following: • Press the CAMERA button on the device; or • Tap Start > Programs > Camera. To exit the camera, tap the Exit icon ( Capture a still image ) on the screen. Camera screen 1. After launching the camera, tap or at the upper left side of the screen, or press NAVIGATION left or right to select the Photo capture mode. 2.
Send by e-mail After taking a photo or recording a video clip, you can immediately send it by e-mail: 1. On the Review screen where it shows a preview of the photo or video that you have just captured, tap . 2. Select Send via E-mail then tap Send. 3. If you have more than one e-mail account on the device, the Select an account screen will appear. Tap Outlook E-mail or your POP3/IMAP4 account.
13. Using Camera Album View your photos and videos using Camera Album. Camera Album offers a host of features that let you rotate images, view your images as a slide show, use images as contacts pictures, and more. To open Camera Album • Tap Start > Programs > Camera Album; or • In the Camera program, tap the Album icon ( ). Depending on the capture mode you are in, Camera Album will show either still images or video clips on the device.
While viewing an image, you can advance to the next image or go back to the previous image; rotate the image; zoom in or out on the image, and more. To advance to the next image or go back to the previous image • Advance to the next image by sliding your finger across the screen from right to left; or • Go back to the previous image by sliding your finger from left to right. To rotate the image With your finger, make a half-circle motion on the screen.
To zoom in or out of an image With your finger, make a full-circle motion on the screen. • Slide your finger clockwise to zoom in; or • Slide your finger counter-clockwise to zoom out. View the images as a slide show 1 Touch to open the slide show options where you can set the transition effect, time per slide, and orientation of the images. 2 Touch to go back to the previous image. 3 Touch to play or pause slideshow playback. 4 Touch to advance to the next image.
14. Using Windows Media Player You can use Windows Media® Player Mobile to play digital audio and video files that are stored on the device or on a network, such as on a Web site. To open Windows Media® Player Mobile • Tap Start > Programs > Windows Media. Tap and drag to jump to any part of the video or audio Mute/Unmute Full screen Increase Volume Visit WindowsMedia.
About the screens and menus Windows Media® Player Mobile has three primary screens: • Playback screen. The screen that displays the playback controls (such as Play, Pause, Next, Previous, and Volume) and the video window. You can change the appearance of this screen by choosing a different skin. • Now Playing screen. The screen that displays the Now Playing playlist. This special playlist indicates the current file being played and any files that are “queued up” to play next. • Library screen.
To play video and audio files on the device 1. Select a category (for example, My Music or My Playlists). 2. Tap and hold the item that you want to play (such as a song, album, or artist name), then tap Play. Playlists In Windows Media® Player Mobile, you can create a new playlist by saving the current Now Playing playlist and giving it a new name. To save a new playlist 1. If you are not on the Library screen, tap Menu > Library. 2. Tap to select a category (for example, My Music or My Playlists). 3.
15. Customizing Your HTC Touch™ You can customize the look and feel of your HTC Touch™ and set the time and date according to the current time zone. Customize the Today screen 1. Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Today. 2. On the Appearance tab, select the desired theme for the background of the Today screen. 3. On the Items tab, select the items you want to appear on the Today screen. Customize the Start Menu 1. Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Menus. 2.
16. Securing Your HTC Touch™ You can prevent unauthorized access to any part of your HTC Touch™ by specifying a device password. Protect your HTC Touch™ with a password 1. Tap Start > Settings > Personal tab > Lock. 2. Select the Prompt if device unused for check box, and in the box to the right, select how long the device must be idle before a password is required. In the Password type box, select the type of password you would like to use. Enter the password and confirm it. 3.

• Handle battery packs carefully This product contains a Li-ion battery. There is a risk of fire and burns if the battery pack is handled improperly. Do not attempt to open or service the battery pack. Do not disassemble, crush, puncture, short external contacts or circuits, dispose of in fire or water, or expose a battery pack to temperatures higher than 60˚C (140˚F). WARNING: Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR DIRECT SUNLIGHT Keep this product away from excessive moisture and extreme temperatures. Do not leave the product or its battery inside a vehicle or in places where the temperature may exceed 60°C (140°F), such as on a car dashboard, window sill, or behind a glass that is exposed to direct sunlight or strong ultraviolet light for extended periods of time. This may damage the product, overheat the battery, or pose a risk to the vehicle.
ROAD SAFETY Vehicle drivers in motion are not permitted to use telephony services with handheld devices, except in the case of emergency. In some countries, using hands-free devices as an alternative is allowed. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR RF EXPOSURE • Avoid using your device near metal structures (for example, the steel frame of a building). • Avoid using your device near strong electromagnetic sources, such as microwave ovens, sound speakers, TV and radio.

General Precautions • Heed service markings Except as explained elsewhere in the Operating or Service documentation, do not service any product yourself. Service needed on components inside these compartments should be done by an authorized service technician or provider.
NOTICE: When taking the device from low-temperature conditions into a warmer environment or from hightemperature conditions into a cooler environment, allow the device to acclimate to room temperature before turning on power. • Avoid pushing objects into product Never push objects of any kind into cabinet slots or other openings in the product. Slots and openings are provided for ventilation. These openings must not be blocked or covered.

Other Medical Devices If you use any other personal medical device, consult the manufacturer of your device to determine if it is adequately shielded from external RF energy. Your physician may be able to assist you in obtaining this information. Turn the phone OFF in health care facilities when any regulations posted in these areas instruct you to do so. Hospitals or health care facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy.
Additional Safety Information This section provides more safety information in addition to the information at the beginning of the user manual. When Driving Do Not Use The PC Functions Of Your Pocket PC While Driving Or Walking Never use the personal computer functions of your device while driving an automobile or any other moving vehicle. Always pull out of traffic and come to a stop in a legally permissible and safe location before using your device.
If you must use the phone function while driving, please: • Give full attention to driving. Driving safely is your first responsibility. • Use hands-free operation and/or one-touch, speed dialing, and auto answer modes. • Pull off the road and park before making or answering a call. WARNING: Failure to follow these instructions could lead to serious personal injury and possible property damage.
Persons with pacemakers: • Should ALWAYS keep the phone more than six inches from their pacemaker when the phone is turned ON. • Should not carry the phone in a breast pocket. • Should use the ear opposite the pacemaker to minimize the potential for interference. • Note: This is not necessary if the PDA phone is not held to the ear. If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, turn the phone OFF immediately.

General Safety Your pocket PC is a high quality piece of equipment. Before operating, read all instructions and cautionary markings on the product, battery and adapter/charger. Failure to follow the directions below could result in serious bodily injury and/or property damage due to battery liquid leakage, fire or rupture. DO NOT use or store this equipment in a place where it will be exposed to high temperatures, such as near an open flame or heat-emitting equipment.
Battery Safety Your device uses a removable and rechargeable lithium ion battery. Please contact customer service for assistance should you need a replacement battery. DOs • • • • • • • • Only use the battery and charger approved by the manufacturer. Only use the battery for its original purpose. Try to keep batteries in a temperature between 41°F (5°C) and 95°F (35°C). If the battery is stored in temperatures above or below the recommended range, give it time to warm up or cool down before using.
Adapter/Charger Use the Correct External Power Source A product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the electrical ratings label. If you are not sure of the type of power source required, consult your authorized service provider or local power company. For a product that operates from battery power or other sources, refer to the operating instructions that are included with the product.
