Configuring a
Service Profile
A service profile controls advertisement and encryption for an SSID. You
can specify the following:
Whether SSIDs that use the service profile are beaconed
Whether the SSIDs are encrypted or clear (unencrypted)
For encrypted SSIDs, the encryption settings to use
The SSID type must be crypto (encrypted) for encryption to be used. If the
SSID type is clear, wireless traffic is not encrypted, regardless of the
encryption settings.
1 Access the WX Switch wizard for the WX switch. (See “Accessing the WX
Switch Wizard” on page 187.)
2 Select Wireless at the top of the wizard, if not already selected.
3 Select Service Profile from the organizer list on the left side of the page.
4 Click New Service Profile. The Create Service Profile wizard appears.
5 In the Name box, type a name of up to 16 alphanumeric characters, with
no spaces, for the service profile.
6 In the SSID box, edit the SSID name. The name can be 1 to 32
alphanumeric characters long, with no spaces or tabs.
7 In the SSID Type pull-down list, select whether the SSID is encrypted or
unencrypted. New SSIDs are encrypted by default.
8 To disable beaconing (advertisement) of the SSID by 3Com radios, click
on the Yes checkbox next to Beacon to disable beaconing. When
beaconing is disabled, clients can find the SSID only by sending a probe
request. Beaconing is enabled by default.
When you disable beaconing for an SSID, the radio still sends beacon
frames, but the SSID name in the frames is blank.
