2. The chart is allowed to dry for a period of time that depends on the paper type, so that the colors have time
to stabilize.
3. The chart is scanned and measured.
4. From the measurements, the printer calculates the necessary correction factors to apply for consistent
color printing on that paper type. It also calculates the maximum amount of each ink that can be applied to
the paper.
Color proling
Color calibration provides consistent colors, but consistent colors are not necessarily accurate. For instance, if
your printer prints all colors as black, its colors may be consistent but they are not accurate. In order to print
accurate colors, it is necessary to convert the color values in your les to the color values that will produce the
correct colors from your printer, your inks, and your paper. An ICC color prole is a description of a printer, ink, and
paper combination that contains all the information needed for these color conversions.
Create your own prole (Z9

only)
You can create a color prole easily using the HP Utility. The process takes about 15–20 minutes and consists of
the following steps:
1. Load paper into the printer: see Load a roll into the printer on page 29 or Load a single sheet on page 32.
You will nd the paper name in the paper or custom paper category in the front panel and the HP Utility. If
you cannot nd the paper name, you can create your own paper preset: see To create your own paper
preset on page 36.
IMPORTANT: When loading the paper, make sure to select the correct paper type. Loading the paper with
an incorrect paper type specied could cause errors in the prole.
NOTE: The paper must be calibrated before proling.
2. Go to the HP Utility.
Under Windows: Click Prole paper.
Under macOS: click Paper management, then at the bottom of the window, then Prole paper.
3. The printer asks you about the process to be used. Print target and ICC prole is the standard option and
suitable for most cases.
If you would like to use a longer drying time, you can ask the HP Utility to create the chart without going on
to create a prole (Windows: Print target only. Create ICC prole later; macOS: Print ICC proling chart).
Then, later, when the chart is completely dry, you can use the HP Utility’s Color Center to create a prole
using the chart you have already created (Windows: Create ICC prole from a target that has already been
