196 Monitoring and maintaining FSE
FSE log files
FSE log files provide a variety of information on FSE events, such as error and status messages, details on
FSE job execution, and resource allocation. You can use them to monitor FSE operations, for statistical
purposes as well as for backup tracing.
The FSE log files are the following:
• FSE event log (fse.log)
This log records relevant information on FSE-process events that occur during FSE operation.
• FSE error log (error.log)
This log records error messages generated by FSE processes.
• FSE check log
(check_hsmfs_fsc_PartitionName.log, check_media_fsc_PartitionName.log)
This log records inconsistencies found by the maintenance job that performs a File System Catalog
consistency check with the HSM file system or with FSE media, for the specified FSE partition.
• FSE backup log (backup.log)
This log records information related to the events of the FSE backup process.
• FSE restore log (restore.log)
This log records information related to the events of the FSE restore process.
• HSM file system log (hsmfs_PartitionName.log)
This log records all events that occur on an HSM file system: file creation, rename, move, deletion,
recall, and so on. Each configured FSE partition has its own HSM file system log. The log file is located
on the FSE client that hosts the FSE partition.
For information on the locations of FSE log files on a particular platform, see appendix ”Directory layout”
on page 291.
Viewing FSE log files
To display any FSE log file using command-line interface, run a native operating system command, such as
less or cat, or an appropriate third-party tool.
To display FSE error logs using graphical user interface, in the FSE Management Console window, in the
object tree, click the physical object Log. Contents of the FSE error log will be displayed in the right pane.
