PCI Hot Plug Capability
A PCI Hot Plug-capable system includes the system hardware, operating
system, and device driver support for PCI Hot Plug operations and user
interface. To be PCI Hot Plug capable, the system board and expansion boards
must comply with established PCI specifications, the appropriate PCI Hot Plug
device driver must be installed, and the operating system must be enabled for
PCI Hot Plug support. If any of the required conditions are not available, the
system is still fully functional, although not PCI Hot Plug capable.
PCI Hot Plug Utility
The PCI Hot Plug utility, which varies for each operating system, is the user
interface of the PCI Hot Plug architecture. The application performs the
following functions:
Slot control
PCI Hot Plug option configuration
Adapter status monitoring and reporting
PCI Hot Plug Slot Features
PCI Hot Plug features enable you to remove, upgrade, and add PCI expansion
boards without powering down the server by either using the PCI Hot Plug
button or the PCI Hot Plug utility software. Any PCI adapter can be placed in
a PCI Hot Plug slot. However, PCI Hot Plug device drivers and operating
system support are required to enable the PCI Hot Plug feature.
PCI Hot Plug Button
The PCI Hot Plug button provides PCI Hot Plug hardware control without
requiring you to first run the PCI Hot Plug utility software. Press the PCI Hot
Plug button once to power down or power up a slot. You can cancel an action
by pressing the button again within five seconds. When you press the button,
the system automatically stops or starts expansion board drivers.
