PCI Hot Plug is backward compatible, and system components fit into one of
two categories: hot-plug aware or non-hot-plug aware. Your server must meet
all of the following criteria to be PCI Hot Plug-capable:
■ PCI Hot Plug system hardware (available in this server)
■ PCI Hot Plug device drivers installed from the Compaq SmartStart for
Servers CD
■ Operating system with PCI Hot Plug support
For information about specific operating systems with PCI Hot Plug support,
refer to the operating system support matrix available from the Compaq
website:
ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/os%20feature%20matrix%20103000.pdf
IMPORTANT: Before adding or removing any PCI Hot Plug devices, be sure to remove
power to the slot using the PCI Hot Plug application. Failure to do so could result in critical
errors.
CAUTION: If any of the three required components are not hot-plug capable,
the system is fully functional, though not PCI Hot Plug-capable.
PCI Hot Plug Technology
With PCI Hot Plug capabilities, you can remove and add PCI expansion
boards without powering the server down, but you must use the proper
procedures described in this chapter. For procedures, see the “PCI Hot Plug
LEDs and Button” and “Installing PCI Hot Plug Expansion Boards” sections
in this chapter.
If you are installing a SCSI controller in a PCI expansion slot, plan the SCSI
configuration before installing the board. Consult the following sources of
information when planning the SCSI installation:
■ For installation information and controller configuration, refer to the
documentation that ships with the SCSI drives.
■ For information on compatibility of SCSI controllers with SCSI drives
in this server, refer to the Compaq website:
www.compaq.com/products/storageworks
■ For information on SCSI cabling, see Chapter 8, “Server Cabling.”
■ For information on using RBSU to set up a SCSI drive array, see
Chapter 9, “Server Configuration and Utilities.”
