750 CHAPTER 17: USING 3COM NETWORK DIRECTOR ON A MULTI-SITE NETWORK
The ifType field indicates the value in the ifType column of the MIBII
ifTable that is used to identify interfaces of this type. If an interface
does not have an entry in the ifTable, or if it does not use one of the
ifType values identified above, then it will not be identified as a WAN
interface by 3Com Network Director.
Key Considerations
Problems with
Discovering Remote
Sites
In order to discover a remote site successfully, 3Com Network Director
must be configured with appropriate numbers of retries and timeout
periods to account for the WAN links in the path to that site. If you run a
Network Discovery and do not enter appropriate values for the subnets at
that remote site then you may find that:
■ Some or even all of the devices at the site are not discovered at all.
■ Some of the devices at the site may be discovered as MAC-only
devices.
■ 3Com Network Director may fail to retrieve full details of some or all
of the devices’ features and configurations.
■ 3Com Network Director may be unable to correctly determine the
topology of the site.
If any of these issues arise when you are discovering a remote site then
you should examine the Discovery report to see if there are any errors
reported for the subnets at the remote site that indicate that devices at
the site stopped responding during discovery. These errors can indicate
that the numbers of retries or timeout periods are set too low for that
site.
In order to resolve this issue you should try to determine suitable numbers
of retries and timeout periods for different request types to the devices at
that site and then re-run the Network Discovery for the site using those
