Configuration 709
Monitoring local devices does not involve the use of WAN links, and so
these can use more frequent polling rates than remote devices, providing
a more accurate picture of the state of these devices.
Similarly, remote devices that you monitor in response monitoring mode
generate less traffic at each poll than devices that you monitor in full
monitoring mode. As a result, a remote site where most or all of the
devices are monitored in response monitoring mode can be polled more
frequently than one where most or all of the devices are monitored in full
monitoring mode.
This means that, by carefully choosing a few select devices at a remote
site that require full monitoring and using response monitoring for all
other devices at that site, you can poll the devices at that site more
frequently than otherwise would have been possible.
Unless they are critical servers, it is recommended that you do not
monitor end stations at remote sites at all.
Issues and Techniques when Configuring Monitoring Modes and
Poll Rates
Monitoring modes and poll rates are configured in 3Com Network
Director using the same hierarchy as the Retry/Timeout settings. As a
result, the things to bear in mind when configuring monitoring modes
and poll rates in a multi-site network are similar to those encountered
when configuring the Retry/Timeout hierarchy:
Before starting to configure the monitoring modes and poll rates
hierarchy, it is important to correctly identify the local and remote sites
with regards to the PC that 3Com Network Director is running on. Where
possible, each site should be identified by the IP subnets that are unique
to that site.
If you have determined that there are different monitoring mode and poll
rate requirements for different devices within the same IP subnet then
you will be unable to override the whole map settings at the subnet level
such that you satisfy the requirements of all of the devices in that subnet.
For example, you may have determined that the majority of the devices
within a subnet that is located at a remote site should be monitored in
response monitoring mode with 300 second polls for the core devices
and 900 second polls for the non-core devices, while some of the more
important devices in the subnet should be monitored in full monitoring
mode with 120 second polls.
