588 CHAPTER 14: BULK CONFIGURATION
3Com Network Director uses the information in the current map to
determine the type of ports. Consequently, if the network has changed
since it was last discovered, the ports selected using the Add Ports by
Typ e dialog box may not be completely accurate.
For port selections only, a summary of the ports selected on any given
device will be displayed to the right of the device’s label. The summary
will be one of all ports selected, various ports selected, or no ports
selected, as appropriate.
Loading and Saving Device and Port Selections
To save a device or port selection from the Selection Editor dialog box use
the Save As… button. Use the file chooser dialog box to find the location
in which to store the selection and then enter a name for the new file.
To load a previously saved selection from the Selection Editor dialog box
use the Open… button. Use the file chooser dialog to locate the device or
port selection to open.
Saved selections are independent of both the map and the configuration
templates, and can therefore be reused in conjunction with different map
files and different configuration templates.
However, if a selection is loaded that contains a device that is not present
in the current map then the missing device will be highlighted when the
selection is viewed in the Selection Editor dialog box. However, if a
configuration operation is performed on a selection that contains missing
devices the missing devices will be ignored by the configuration
operation.
3Com Network Director matches devices in a loaded selection with the
corresponding devices in the map using a physical identifier based on the
hardware addresses of the device. The physical identification of a device
made up of more than one unit is unique to that combination of units. If
the units belonging to a device that is a member of a selection, are
replaced or re-arranged 3Com Network Director may no longer be able to
match the selection with its representation in the map.
