• Multi-System Access to other HP e3000 systems on the LAN.
• Back-to-Back Access from one DTC port to another.
PC-Based Management
When PC-Based Management is used, configuration and control information for
the DTCs is maintained on the OpenView Windows Workstation running the
OpenView DTC Manager software. This information is downloaded from the
workstation to each of the DTCs being managed. The OpenView Windows
Workstation must reside on the same LAN segment as the DTCs which it
manages, ie., no routers are allowed between the Management PC and the DTCs
the PC is managing.
The DTCs are able to function as datacommunication servers for multiple
computers on the LAN. These systems can be HP e3000s, HP 9000s, HP 1000s or
third-party nodes, which run the ARPA standard Telnet service using the Telnet
Access Card (TAC) in the DTCs.
Managed and Non-Managed DTCs
When a DTC is configured in a Host-Based environment the DTC is managed by the
management platform that downloads the DTC configuration and performs all the other
management functions such as DTC resets, uploads and controls the operation of all
DTC functions. It is possible to configure the same DTC on another HP e3000 system so
that it is a non-managed DTC on the system where the configuration is entered. A DTC
would be configured as a non-managed DTC on a system in order to configure nailed
devices that can be accessed from a shared DTC. In this way a terminal, printer or PAD
device can be shared as a nailed device on multiple systems. This sharing of serial
devices uses the Host-Based Switching features of the DTS subsystem.
The DTC is managed by the management platform that has the proper DTC LAN
Station Address defined. To configure the same DTC as a non-managed DTC on another
HP e3000, you create a DTC configuration with the same DTC Node Name and configure
the DTC LAN station address as 00-00-00-00-00-00.
CAUTION The DTC MUST be defined as being managed by one and only one management
platform. If a configuration for a DTC with the same LAN Station address is configured
on more than one management platform, it is a race condition as to which platform will
actually respond and download the DTC when the DTC is powered on. Usage of the
management features such as reset on the other platform may have unpredictable
affects on the DTC’s operations.
The procedures for defining a DTC as a managed or non-managed DTC are provided in
Chapter 5, “Configuring Serial Devices (for Host-Based Management),” of this manual.
