How the File System Manages Information
The file system is the part of the MPE/iX operating system that manages information
being stored or transferred. It handles various input/output operations, such as passing
information to and from user processes. All input and output operations are done
through files. Files can be kept in any storage medium and accessed by any input/output
peripheral device.
Two basic types of files exist:
• Disk files. These are files residing on disk, immediately accessible to the system and
potentially shareable by several sessions or jobs at the same time.
• Device files. These are files currently being input from or output to any peripheral
device except a disk.
