Handling Media Requests

Automatically Assigning Devices

You may choose to conﬁgure backup devices so that they are automatically assigned to

users. This is also referred to as

auto reply

. When devices are conﬁgured for automatic

assignment, the system automatically answers media requests for you.

Devices conﬁgured for automatic assignment must have the following characteristics:

• The device mode must be R (autoreply).

• The device must not be job or data accepting.

• The device must not be assigned to another user.

• The device speciﬁcation must be unique. You must use the device speciﬁcation (logical

device number or unique device class) in a FILE command describing the device.

• The user must request an unlabeled media.

Refer to System Startup, Conﬁguration, and Shutdown Reference Manual for instructions

for conﬁguring devices.

In order for the system to automatically assign a correctly conﬁgured device, the user (or

you, if you are storing or restoring ﬁles yourself) must name the device and its LDEV

number (or device class, if the device class is unique) in a FILE command preceding the

STORE command, and the device must not be assigned to any other user. If a device cannot

be automatically assigned, you must assign the device in the standard manner.
