Message: pathname: Nonportable character ’char’ found.

Cause: You were using the –p option and you speciﬁed a pathname containing the

character char which is not in the portable character set.

Action: Specify a pathname that contains only characters found in the portable charac-

ter set.

Message: pathname: Not searchable.

Cause: You speciﬁed a pathname that could not be searched.

Action: Specify a new pathname.

Message: pathname: Pathname too long.

Cause: The length of the path name provided is longer than that allowed by the ﬁlesys-

tem (or by

POSIX,if–p was speciﬁed).

Action: Try to shorten some of the components of the path name, in order to reduce the

overall length of the path name.

Message: Unknown option "–option"

Cause: You speciﬁed an option that is not valid for pathchk.

Action: Check the DESCRIPTION section for a list of valid pathchk options.
