Ambiguous Product ID
In the continuing effort to provide the price-performance advantage of
the latest disk technology and, at the same, timeprotect existing
customer investment, HP uses the same disk mechanism for both
Single-Ended and Differential disks. However, there is a layer of
transparent hardware that masks the electrical differences. This
enables customers to continue to use both their existing Single-Ended
and their existing Differential interface cards, but it requires some
caution in connecting the disk device to the right interface.
Since an Inquiry by a utility such as ODE MAPPER returns the same
Product ID (for example, ST34573WC) for both the Single-Ended and
the Differential version of the disk, you must use the HP Model ID to
distinguish the Single-Ended (for example, A3646A) from the
Differential (for example, A3647A).
As a work-around for SYSGEN, use the “WC”-suffix ID (for example,
ST34573WC) to bind to the Differential drivers; use the “N”-suffix ID
(for example, ST34573N) to bind to the Single-Ended drivers.
CAUTION It is critical that you connect the disk drive to the right bus:
Single-Ended to Single-Ended; Differential to Differential. Failure to do
so will result in unexpected system behavior.
