1 SNA IMF Overview
Systems Network Architecture Interactive Mainframe Facility (SNA
IMF) emulates the major features of an IBM 3270 control unit, using
the protocols of a Node Type 2.0 and Logical Unit Types 1, 2, and 3
(LU.T1, LU.T2, and LU.T3). SNA IMF supports interactive
communication between an HP 3000 and an IBM host. The host can be
an IBM System/370-compatible mainframe (for example, Model 370,
303x, or 43xx), an IBM System/36 or System/38, or an IBM AS/400.
If the HP 3000 will communicate with an IBM mainframe, it must be
connected to an IBM 37xx-compatible communications controller that
supports an SNA line. An HP 3000 can also be connected to the
communications controller via an IBM 3710 network controller. The
host must use an IBM operating system with the Virtual
Telecommunications Access Method (VTAM) and must support remote
IBM 3270 control units.
SNA IMF uses one of these SNA link products:
SNA/SDLC Link: A bundled hardware and software product that
supports a logical and physical connection to an SNA network.
SNA/X.25 Link: A software product that communicates with the
X.25 network through the X.25 XL System Access software on the
HP 3000.
SNA IMF and the SNA link form an HP 3000 subsystem that emulates
the IBM 3270 control unit in an SNA network.
Figure 1-1 shows the different LU types that SNA IMF can implement.
