Special Note on SCSI Device Configuration
for MPE/iX 6.0

Overview
With the release of MPE/iX 6.0, all SCSI devices must have as part of
their device configuration a pseudo device with a "transparent_mgr"
that was created with SYSGEN. This requirement is for all SCSI
devices on a system running MPE/iX 6.0.
Future I/O technology requires the consistent usage of
"transparent_mgr" in the base MPE/iX I/O configuration.
The default configuration files that are part of the factory System Load
Tape (SLT) all have the "TRANSPARENT_MGR" requirement built into
the device configuration for all SCSI devices.
Today, all systems with SCSI devices should already be configured with
the "transparent_mgr" requirement except for Magneto-Optical(MO)
Devices. Previous MO installation instructions disallowed
"transparent_mgr" in their configuration.
If you are performing an UPDATE to MPE/iX 6.0 or are using your
archived configuration files when performing an INSTALL, you must
check and ensure that each SCSI device has a "TRANSPARENT_MGR"
in its device path, prior to performing the UPDATE or INSTALL.
Failure to perform this step will cause problems that could lead to
inability to access data on the SCSI device.
The remainder of this article provides some examples for configuration
of SCSI devices on HP3000 systems. As with most devices on the
HP3000, SCSI device configuration is done via SYSGEN. The actual
entries made in SYSGEN are dependent upon the device rather than
the I/O architecture (CIO, hybrid or Precision Bus).
On the HP3000 the requirement for configuration of SCSI devices is to
actually make two path entries per device. The first entry is the pseudo
device entry for the "TRANSPARENT_MGR." This entry is not a logical
device itself; rather, it is a place holder required by the SCSI Device
Manager Software. The second entry is for the actual device itself. This
is true for CIO, "hybrid" or Precision Bus systems even though these
systems use different SCSI controllers.
In the past there was only one set of devices that did not follow this
convention, Magneto-Optical Devices. With the release of MPE/iX 6.0,
Magneto-Optical devices must also make use of pseudo devices in their
configuration. You must add pseudo devices for the MO Autochanger
