Performance measurements (defined in tiers)
Tier 1—Light load, excellent performance, high consolidation potential
Tier 2—Moderate load, performance, and consolidation potential
Tier 3—Heavy load, performance near thresholds; consolidation possible once issues are
resolved
Tier 4—Extreme load, performance that has crossed thresholds; performance analysis required
before consolidation
In addition to the above classifications, an exclusion list can be built to eliminate servers that will NOT
participate in consolidation as per the following considerations:
SQL 6.5 or SQL 7.0—These should be considered either for retirement or for upgrade to SQL Server
2000 by individual application development teams in a separate effort. These should only be
included in the consolidation effort if upgrade and testing are completed in time for inclusion in
performance data collection and analysis.
MSDE—MSDE SQL Servers are intended for development, for lightweight desktop use, or for
support of lightweight applications—not as dedicated production SQL Server 2000 servers; these
can be excluded.
Application servers—Several instances of SQL Server installed in conjunction with Application
Server, Microsoft Operations Management (MOM) Server, or Microsoft Systems Management
Server (SMS) can be excluded from the scope of the project.
Dedicated servers—Servers dedicated to specific functions or projects that could not be combined
with other servers can be excluded from the scope of the project.
