Introduction
HP ProLiant Essentials Performance Management Pack (PMP) is a software solution that detects and analyzes
hardware bottlenecks on ProLiant servers. PMP provides the tools needed to receive proactive notification of
impending bottleneck conditions and debug existing performance issues.
With PMP, performance can be monitored on one or more servers. The performance information is analyzed to
determine if there is an impending or existing performance bottleneck issue. This information can be interactively
displayed or logged to a database for later analysis or reporting, and proactive notification can be set up using
the HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) notification mechanism.
The Online Analysis tool for PMP is an intelligent, easy-to-use tool accessed from clients running Microsoft®
Internet Explorer 6.0 or later. The tool can monitor servers running supported versions of Microsoft Windows®
and Linux. The Web-based application allows the performance of any monitored server to be watched and
analyzed in real-time on a remote client system. Tools for offline analysis are also provided.
NOTE: For detailed information about supported operating systems, refer to the HP ProLiant Essentials
Performance Management Pack Support Matrix.
Structure
The performance monitoring service is designed to run on a separate middle-tier server (analysis server), which
also serves as the HP SIM console server and performs the bulk of the processing. The monitored servers are only
required to run the standard HP Management Agents, installed as part of the HP ProLiant Support Pack. PMP
gathers information about the monitored servers from the Management Agents using SNMP in much the same
way as HP SIM. Because of the design of PMP, there is minimal impact on the monitored servers.
Functionality and performance data are accessed from a client system using Internet Explorer, in which an applet
runs to display the information.
Database software for the analysis server is installed for storing and cataloging data. For a list of eligible
database software on the analysis server, refer to the “Preinstallation requirements” chapter of this guide. The
database requires Windows authentication to be set from HP SIM. For more information about setting
authentication levels with HP SIM, refer to the HP Systems Insight Manager Installation and User Guide.
