Introduction Insight Management Agents is a utility for HP Integrity servers that monitors hardware and software to provide two key pieces of information: 1) component inventory and 2) server health. This paper describes the agents that monitor server health. The HP Integrity Insight Management Agents comprise many individual components that monitor system activity and performance to detect errors and record information in system log files.

Event Subsystem The Event Subsystem is an exclusive feature of the HP Integrity server and controls the HP Insight Management Service. The Event Subsystem uses several other services as sub-agents to record system activity. The Event Synchronization service maintains a log synchronized with the System Event Log (SEL). The Loop-back Event Restore (LER) service captures SNMP alarms generated by supported third party software and writes the information back to the SEL.

Output These SNMP traps are logged to the IPMI SEL; consequently, they are also logged to the Windows System Log. Predictive Failure Monitor (PFM) Predictive Failure Monitor is an exclusive service of the HP Integrity server that monitors correctable errors in the system, anticipates more serious failures (predictable failures), and generates special, customer-visible, predictive failure events and SNMP alarms when a component reaches a designated error threshold. PFM is unique on HP Integrity servers.

Type of Errors The NIC Agent service monitors connectivity lost, connectivity restored, redundancy lost, and redundancy restored. In addition, it indicates virus activity detection status from the Virus Throttle Filter Driver. The Virus Throttle Filter Driver detects virus like activity and attempts to minimize potential damage according to its configuration parameters. Methodology The NIC Agent collects data at the data collection interval set in the control panel applet, (default is 2 minutes).

Agents gather information by calling Windows APIs to collect data and match it with the threshold values set in the Windows registry. The Host Information Agent collects file system, system processor utilization, and running program information from the system.
