1 Welcome ● What's new ● Finding information After you set up and register the computer, it is important to take the following steps: ● Connect to the Internet—Set up your wired or wireless network so that you can connect to the Internet. For more information, refer to Networking on page 17. ● Update your antivirus software—Protect your computer from damage caused by viruses. The software is preinstalled on the computer and includes a limited subscription for free updates.
What's new Beats Audio (select models only) Beats Audio is an enhanced audio profile that provides a deep, controlled bass while maintaining a clear sound. Beats Audio is enabled by default. ▲ To increase or decrease the Beats Audio bass settings, press fn+b. You can also view and control the bass settings through the Windows operating system. To view and control the bass properties: ● Select Start > All Programs > Beats Audio Control Panel > Listening Experience.

Top TouchPad Component (1) TouchPad off light ● On: The TouchPad is off. ● Off: The TouchPad is on. (2) TouchPad on/off button Turns the TouchPad on and off. (3) TouchPad zone Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen. (4) Left TouchPad button Functions like the left button on an external mouse. (5) TouchPad on light ● On: The TouchPad is on. ● Off: The TouchPad is off.
Lights Component Description (1) Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on. (2) Power light ● White: The computer is on. ● Blinking white: The computer is in the Sleep state. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation. ● Amber: Computer sound is off. ● Off: Computer sound is on. ● White: An integrated wireless device, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN) device and/or a Bluetooth® device, is on. ● Amber: All wireless devices are off. ● White: The fingerprint was read.
Buttons, speakers, and fingerprint reader (select models only) Component (1) Description Power button ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the button briefly to initiate Sleep. ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep. ● When the computer is in Hibernation, press the button briefly to exit Hibernation.
Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system information when pressed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Executes frequently used system functions when pressed in combination with the num lk key, the b key, or the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu. (4) b key Increases or decreases the Beats Audio bass settings (select models only). Beats Audio is an enhanced audio profile that provides a deep, controlled bass while maintaining a clear sound.
Component 10 Description (6) Integrated numeric keypad When the keypad has been enabled, the keys can be used like an external numeric keypad. (7) num lk key Enables/disables the integrated numeric keypad when pressed in combination with the fn key. (8) Action keys Execute frequently used system functions.

Right side Component Description (1) Optical drive Reads and writes (select models only) to an optical disc. (2) Optical drive light ● Green: The optical drive is being accessed. ● Off: The optical drive is off. (3) Optical drive eject button Ejects the optical drive. (4) Power light ● White: The computer is on. ● Blinking white: The computer is in the Sleep state. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation. ● Blinking white: The hard drive is being accessed.
Left side Component (1) Description Vent Enables airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation. (2) External monitor port Connects an external VGA monitor or projector. (3) HDMI port Connects an optional video or audio device, such as a high-definition television, or any compatible digital or audio component.
Display Component Description (1) WLAN antennas (2)* Send and receive wireless signals to communicate with wireless local area networks (WLAN). (2) Internal microphones (2) Record sound. (3) Webcam light On: The webcam is in use. (4) Webcam Records video and captures still photographs. To use the webcam, select Start > All Programs > CyberLink YouCam > CyberLink YouCam. *The antennas are not visible from the outside of the computer.
Rear Component Description Vent Enables airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation.
Bottom Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) Battery release latch Releases the battery from the battery bay. (3) Vents (6) Enable airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation.
3 Networking ● Using an Internet service provider (ISP) ● Connecting to a wireless network NOTE: Internet hardware and software features vary depending on computer model and your location. Your computer may support one or both of the following types of Internet access: ● Wireless—For mobile Internet access, you can use a wireless connection. Refer to Connecting to an existing WLAN on page 19 or Setting up a new WLAN network on page 19.
Using an Internet service provider (ISP) Before you can connect to the Internet, you must establish an ISP account. Contact a local ISP to purchase Internet service and a modem. The ISP will help set up the modem, install a network cable to connect your wireless computer to the modem, and test the Internet service. NOTE: Your ISP will give you a user ID and password to access the Internet. Record this information and store it in a safe place.
Connecting to an existing WLAN 1. Turn on the computer. 2. Be sure that the WLAN device is on. 3. Click the network icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar. 4. Select a network to connect to. 5. Click Connect. 6. If required, enter the security key.
Configuring a wireless router For help in setting up a WLAN, refer to the information provided by your router manufacturer or your ISP. The Windows operating system also provides tools to help you set up a new wireless network. To use the Windows tools to set up your network, select Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network > Set up a new network. Then follow the on-screen instructions.

Using the keyboard Using the action keys Action keys are customized actions that are assigned to specific keys at the top of the keyboard. The icons on the f1 through f4 and f6 through f12 keys represent the action key functions. To use an action key, press and hold this key to activate the assigned function. NOTE: The action key feature is enabled at the factory. You can disable this feature in Setup Utility.
Icon Key Description f11 Mutes or restores speaker sound. f12 Turns the wireless feature on or off. NOTE: This key does not establish a wireless connection. To establish a wireless connection, a wireless network must also be set up. Using the hotkeys A hotkey is a combination of the fn key (1) and either the esc key (2) or the b key (3). To use a hotkey: ▲ Briefly press the fn key, and then briefly press the second key of the hotkey combination.
Function Hotkey Description Display system information. fn+esc Displays information about system hardware components and the system BIOS version number. Control the bass settings (select models only). fn+b Increases or decreases the Beats Audio bass settings (select models only). Beats Audio is an enhanced audio profile that provides a deep, controlled bass while maintaining a clear sound. Beats Audio is enabled by default.
(1) Component Description num lk key Alternates between the navigational and numeric functions on the integrated numeric keypad. NOTE: The keypad function that is active when the computer is turned off remains on when the computer is turned back on. (2) Integrated numeric keypad Can be used like an external numeric keypad.
Turning the TouchPad off and on To turn the TouchPad off and on, quickly double-tap the TouchPad on/off button. Navigating To move the pointer, slide one finger across the TouchPad in the direction you want the pointer to go.
Selecting Use the left and right TouchPad buttons like the corresponding buttons on an external mouse. Using TouchPad gestures The TouchPad supports a variety of gestures. To use TouchPad gestures, place two fingers on the TouchPad at the same time. NOTE: TouchPad gestures are not supported in all programs. To view the demonstration of a gesture: 1. Right-click the Synaptics icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and then click TouchPad Properties. 2.
Scrolling Scrolling is useful for moving up, down, or sideways on a page or image. To scroll, place two fingers slightly apart on the TouchPad, and then drag them across the TouchPad in an up, down, left, or right motion. NOTE: Scrolling speed is controlled by finger speed. NOTE: Two-finger scrolling is enabled at the factory. Pinching/Zooming Pinching allows you to zoom in or out on images or text. ● Zoom in by placing two fingers together on the TouchPad, and then moving them apart.

To insert the battery: 1. Turn the computer upside down on a flat surface, with the battery bay toward you. 2. Align the battery (1) with the outer edge of the battery bay. 3.
To remove the battery: CAUTION: Removing a battery that is the sole power source for the computer can cause loss of information. To prevent loss of information, save your work and initiate Hibernation or shut down the computer through Windows before removing the battery. 1. Turn the computer upside down on a flat surface. 2. Slide the battery release latch (1) to release the battery. NOTE: The battery release latch automatically returns to its original position. 3.
Replacing or upgrading the hard drive CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Shut down the computer before removing the hard drive from the hard drive bay. Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is on, in the Sleep state, or in Hibernation. If you are not sure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on by pressing the power button. Then shut down the computer through the operating system. Removing the hard drive 1.
9. Lift the hard drive (3) out of the hard drive bay. Installing a hard drive 1. Insert the hard drive (1) into the hard drive bay. 2. Replace the 4 hard drive screws (2). 3. Connect the hard drive cable (3) to the computer. 4. Replace the hard drive cover: a. 32 With the battery bay toward you, position the hard drive cover (1) at a 45-degree angle from the surface of the computer so that the tabs on the underside of the cover align with the matching slots on the computer.
b. Gently press the hard drive cover (2) down, applying pressure to both the left and right edges of the cover, until it snaps into place. 5. Replace the battery. 6. Turn the computer right-side up, and then reconnect external power and external devices. 7. Turn on the computer. Adding or replacing memory modules The computer has two memory module slots. The memory module slots are located on the bottom of the computer under the hard drive cover.
3. Unplug the power cord from the AC outlet. 4. Turn the computer upside down on a flat surface. 5. Remove the battery from the computer. NOTE: For more information, refer to the section Inserting or removing the battery on page 29. 6. 7. Remove the hard drive cover: a. Slide the battery release latch (1) to loosen the hard drive cover. b. Pull away the hard drive cover (2). If you are replacing a memory module, remove the existing memory module: a.
b. Grasp the edge of the memory module (2), and then gently pull the memory module out of the memory module slot. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges only. Do not touch the components on the memory module. To protect a memory module after removal, place it in an electrostatic-safe container. 8. Insert a new memory module: CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges only.
9. Replace the hard drive cover: a. With the battery bay toward you, position the hard drive cover (1) at a 45-degree angle from the surface of the computer so that the tabs on the underside of the cover align with the matching slots on the computer. b. Gently press the hard drive cover (2) down, applying pressure to both the left and right edges of the cover, until it snaps into place. 10. Replace the battery. 11. Turn the computer right-side up, and then reconnect external power and external devices.
Updating programs and drivers HP recommends that you update your programs and drivers on a regular basis with the latest versions. Go to http://www.hp.com/support to download the latest versions. You can also register to receive automatic update notifications when they become available.
6 Backup and recovery ● Restore ● Creating restore media ● Performing a system restore ● Backing up and recovering your information Your computer includes tools provided by the operating system and HP to help you safeguard your information and restore it if ever needed.
Restore In the event of hard drive failure, to restore your system to its factory image you will need a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive, both of which you can create using HP Recovery Manager. HP recommends that you use this software to create either a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive immediately after software setup.
To create a set of recovery discs or a recovery flash drive: 1. Select Start > All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Media Creation. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Performing a system restore Recovery Manager software allows you to repair or restore the computer to its original factory state. Recovery Manager works from recovery discs, from a recovery flash drive, or from a dedicated recovery partition (select models only) on the hard drive.
Restoring using the restore media 1. If possible, back up all personal files. 2. Insert the first recovery disc into the optical drive on your computer or an optional external optical drive, and then restart the computer. – or – Insert the recovery flash drive into a USB port on your computer, and then restart the computer. NOTE: If the computer does not automatically restart in the Recovery Manager, the computer boot order needs to be changed. 3. Press f9 at system bootup. 4.
Changing the computer boot order To change the boot order for recovery discs: 1. Restart the computer. 2. Press esc while the computer is restarting, and then press f9 for boot options. 3. Select Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive from the boot options window. To change the boot order for a recovery flash drive: 1. Insert the flash drive into a USB port. 2. Restart the computer. 3. Press esc while the computer is restarting, and then press f9 for boot options. 4.
To create a screen shot: 1. Display the screen you want to save. 2. Copy the screen image: To copy only the active window, press alt+fn+prt sc. To copy the entire screen, press fn+prt sc. 3. Open a word-processing document, and then select Edit > Paste. The screen image is added to the document. 4. Save and print the document. Using Windows Backup and Restore Guidelines: ● Be sure that the computer is connected to AC power before you start the backup process.
Using Windows system restore points A system restore point allows you to save and name a snapshot of your hard drive at a specific point in time. You can then recover back to that point if you want to reverse subsequent changes. NOTE: Recovering to an earlier restore point does not affect data files saved or e-mails created since the last restore point. You also can create additional restore points to provide increased protection for your files and settings.

The serial number label is affixed to the bottom of the computer.
8 Specifications ● Input power ● Operating environment Input power The power information in this section may be helpful if you plan to travel internationally with the computer. The computer operates on DC power, which can be supplied by an AC or a DC power source. The AC power source must be rated at 100–240 V, 50–60 Hz.
