Managing Software With DSM/SCM
HP periodically issues new and revised software products. Use DSM/SCM to install,
plan, and manage the new software on your local and distributed systems. From your
host system, you can control the installation and configuration of the software on all
your systems, local or remote, network connected or not.

This section is an overview. For detailed instruction for each part of the process, see
Sections 7 through 11.
Installing and managing software includes:
1. Receive Software Inputs Into the Archive—Copy the software inputs from their tape
or disk subvolumes into the archive on the host system, thus adding the product
distribution files to the archive.
2. Create a New Software Revision—On the host system, plan and create a new
software revision – a list of the products to be installed on a target system.
3. Build a New Configuration Revision—Create a new configuration revision from the
products listed in the new soft
ware revision. The distribution files are merged into
executable formats. If necessary, DSM/SCM manufactures new files from the
distribution files.
4. Apply the New Configuration Revision—Place the merged files on the target
system. A snapshot of the target is created, transferred to the host system, and
received into the host database.
5. Activate the New Software on the Target System—The new software is renamed
as needed, and the system is readied to run the new sof
tware.
