Installing HP Insight Software 6.1 Update 1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Clusters with SQL Server 2008 for high availability

these management product
s can also be highly available. In a Failover Cluster environment, a virtual
server name and associated IP address for the HP
Systems Insight Manager
service can be created as
a cluster resource, allowing failover for higher availability in case of a syste
m failure or planned
shutdown. Cluster resources are also created for other Insight Software components, including those
that are bundled with Insight Control and Insight Dynamics, allowing failover of these services.
Additionally, by distributing the load
for Microsoft SQL Server and Insight Software components on
separate systems, more efficient use can be made of cluster system resources.
This white paper describes the steps to install a highly available clustered version of Insight Software
on HP ProLia
nt servers running Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Microsoft SQL
Server 2008 Enterprise Service Pack 1.

The relationship between the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise instances and Insight Software is
shown in Figure 1.
A Failover Cluster defines
virtual servers
. A virtual serv
er has a unique static client
-
facing network
name and IP address, called an
access point
that is registered with the DNS. The virtual server also
associates the access point with a Wi
ndows service and typically other
cluster resources that, at
any time, ma
y run on, one of the cluster’s systems
physical servers
. When a Windows service is
configured this way, it is also called a
cluster service
.
A client accesses the Insight Software CMS through its virtual server. Clients connect to
Systems
Insight Manager
,
and thereby Insight Software, through
Systems Insight Manager
’s access point.
Network traffic addressed to the virtual server is received by the
Systems Insight Manager
service,
wherever it is running in the cluster.
Insight Software uses the access point
of the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 virtual server to connect to
a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database instance. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is installed as a
cluster service.
The databases used by Insight Software reside in a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database
instance.
Other data files are stored on the Insight Software shared disk.
Figure 1 shows the Failover Cluster with a virtual server for Insight Software and another for
clustered SQL Server 2008. In this document, the preferred system for running Insight
Software is
called the primary system. The system on which SQL Server 2008 normally runs is called the
secondary system.
