The relationship between the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise instances and Insight Software is
shown in Fig ure 1.
• A Failover Cluster defines virtual servers. A virtual server has a unique static client-facing network
name and IP address, called an access point that is registered with the DNS. The virtua l server a lso
a ssocia tes the a ccess point with a W indows service (a nd typica lly other cluster resources) tha t, a t
any time, may run on, at most, one of the cluster’s systems (physical servers). W hen a W indows
service is configured this wa y, it is a lso called a cluster service.
• A client a ccesses the Insight Softwa re CMS through its virtua l server. Clients connect to Systems
Insight Manager, and thereby Insight Software, through Systems Insight Manager’s access point.
Network tra ffic a ddressed to the virtual server is received by the Systems Insight Manager service,
wherever it is running in the cluster. Thus, a client has no need to know on which system Systems
Insight Manager is running.
• Likewise, Insight Software uses the access point of the Microsoft SQ L Server 2008 virtual server to
connect to a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database instance, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is installed
as a cluster service.
• The databases used by the Insight Software reside in a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database
instance. Other data files are stored on the Insight Software shared disk.
• Figure 1 shows the Failover Cluster with a virtual server for Insight Software and another for
clustered SQL Server 2008. In this document, the preferred system for running Insight Software is
called the primary system. The system on which SQL Server 2008 normally runs is called the
secondary system.

The cluster monitors the services belonging to Insight Software and Microsoft SQL Server 2008.
Should a service fa il, the cluster a utoma tica lly presents tha t service’s sha red stora ge to the other
system, moves the virtual server, and restarts the failed service there.
