Appendix C: Applying Insight Software Incremental
Updates
This appendix describes how to apply an Insight Softwa re incremental update to Insig ht Software in a
fa ilover cluster.
An Insight Software incrementa l upda te is a patch that is applied to a major release. For example, a n
Insight Software 6.3 update is a patch for Insight Software 6.3. Insight Softwa re 6 .3 must a lrea dy be
insta lled before insta lling a n Insight Softwa re 6 .3 update.
Testing for this paper focuses on major releases such a s Insight Softwa re 6.3 . N ot a ll upda tes are
tested in a cluster environment. Only install an update if you have good ca use to do so.
Yo u can install an update a t the following times:
1. During a fresh install of a major Insight Software release.
2. During an upgrade to a major Insight Software release.
3. After insta lling an Insight Software major release, you can apply an incremental upda te to an
existing Insight Softwa re insta lla tion.
The rest of this appendix contains a n overview of insta lling an update at each of these 3 times. Also,
it contains information about running the incrementa l upda te insta ller.
Option 1: Installing an Incremental Update during a fresh install
The main body of this white paper describes installing Insight Software in a cluster. It a lso discusses
applying an incrementa l upda te during a fresh insta ll. The steps from the main body of the white
paper are summarized below.
1. Crea te a two-node failover cluster with Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator and
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Service SP1 installed.
2. Insta ll Insight Softwa re 6 .3 on the prima ry system. Immedia tely a fterwa rds, insta ll the Insight
Software 6.3 update on the primary system. Make sure that the secondary system is down while
insta lling Insight Software 6.3 and the update.
3. Insta ll Insight Softwa re 6 .3 on the seconda ry system. Immedia tely a fterwa rds, insta ll the Insight
Software update on the secondary system. Make sure the primary system is down while installing
Insight Software 6.3 and the upda te.
4. Add cluster resources for Insight Softwa re, complete the Insight Softwa re configura tion, a nd
va lida te the insta lla tion.
Option 2: Installing an Incremental Update during an upgrade to a
major release
Appendix B: Upgrading clustered Insight Softwa re, describes upgrading Insight Software in a cluster.
It a lso discusses insta lling an incremental update during an upgrade to a new major release of Insight
Softwa re. The steps from Appendix B are summarized below:
1. Ba c k up the cluster including the Insight Software and SQL Server shared disks.
2. Install any prerequisites for the new software on both cluster nodes.
3. Upgrade the primary system. Install Insight Software 6.3 on the primary system. Immediately
a fterwa rds, insta ll the Insight Softwa re 6 .3 upda te on the prima ry system. Ma ke sure tha t the
secondary system is down while installing Insight Software 6.3 and the update.
