Abstract
Using Failover Clustering with HP Insight Software is a simple way of achieving redundancy,
availability, load balancing, and failover capability for this powerful management software.
Thi s white paper is intended to assist IT professionals with one or more of the following:
1. Install Insight Software 6.3 for ProLiant from its DVD distribution, onto a Microsoft® W indows®-
based Central Management Server (CMS) to create a highly available environment. This white
paper explains how to configure the CMS as a two-node W indows Server 2008 R2 Failover
Cluster. The paper also explains how to install an instance of SQL Server 2008 on the same
cluster. Alternatively, you can use an existing instance of SQL Server 2008 from another cluster.
The main body of this paper concerns this installation process.
2. Upgrade an existing clustered installation of Insight Software 6.1 Update 1 or a succeeding
release, to Insight Software 6.3. Appendix B: Upgrading clustered Insight Software contains steps
you must follow. If you are familiar with the installation process, go directly there; otherwise, you
might benefit from reading the entire document. This assumes you have followed the steps in the
white paper, Installing “HP Insight Software 6.1 Update 1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover
Clusters with SQL Server 2008 for high availability”, to create the cluster you are upgrading.
3. Apply an Insight Software Update (patch) to an existing cluster implementation of Insight Software
6.3. Appendix C: Applying Insight Software Incremental Updates (Patches), contains background
information on Insight Software updates and running the incremental update installer. This assumes
you have followed the steps in this white paper to create the cluster you are upgrading.
4. Add new products to an existing cluster implementation of Insight Software 6.3. Appendix B:
Upgrading clustered Insight Software, contains the steps you must follow. If you are familiar with
the installation process, go directly there; otherwise, you might benefit from reading the entire
document. This assumes you have followed the steps in this white paper to create the cluster you
are upgrading.
5. Migrate an existing Windows 2008 R2 standalone server or cluster system to a new Windows
2008 R2 cluster system in the same domain, where both the source and target systems are
installed with the same level of Insight Software 6.3. Appendix D: Migrating an Insight Software
6.3 Windows 2008 R2 Cluster or a 6.3 Windows 2008 R2 Standalone Server to a Windows
2008 R2 Cluster in the same domain, describes this procedure. (Migration from a Windows 2003
to Windows 2008 system is not supported in Insight Software 6.3.)
VERY I M PO RTA N T:
Insight Software 6.3 does not support Windows 2003 clustering. Windows
2003 is in a limited support phase of its product life cycle, and it does not
support HP ProLiant G7 servers. A migration from an existing W indows
2003 cluster to a new Windows 2008 cluster is not supported in 6.3. HP
recommends that users of W indows 2003 clusters migrate to a W indows
2008 cluster with the 6.2 release. Appendix D of technical white for 6.2,
