Installing and upgrading to HP Insight Software 6.0 on Windows Server 2003 R2 MSCS for high availability

2. HP SIM virtual server IP address and name
Function: To act as the virtual server IP address and name for HP SIM and Insight software.
You specify this name and address to connect to HP SIM through your browser.
Suggested action: All SNMP devices that report their events to HP SIM should use this IP address
and name for the location of the Event Consolidator, the SNMP Trap Destination. The host defined
for the WMI Mapper proxy should use this name and IP address (unless the WMI Mapper service
runs on a system that is not a cluster member and the WMI Mapper is not installed as part of
Insight software). For the examples discussed in this paper, the IP address is 140.110.240.64
and the name is CMS-HPSIM.
3. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 virtual server IP address and name
Function: To act as the virtual server IP address and name for the Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Enterprise Edition database software. This software is used to extract, manipulate, or back up the
Insight Software and HP SIM databases.
Suggested action: The HP SIM Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data source uses the virtual
server IP address and name as the location where the CMS HP SIM Data Source Name (DSN)
points. In the examples discussed in this paper, the IP address is 140.110.240.63 and the name
is CMS-SQLSVR.
4. Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator virtual server IP address and name
Function: To act as the virtual server IP address and name for the Microsoft Distributed Transaction
Coordinator service. This service coordinates distributed transactions across a cluster group.
Suggested action: Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator is installed with Microsoft SQL
Server 2005. In the examples discussed in this paper, the IP address is 140.110.240.65 and the
name is CMS-MSDTC.
Another two static IP addresses and names are needed for the primary and secondary systems.
5. MSCS primary system IP address and name
Function: To serve as the TCP/IP address and name of the specific Microsoft Windows server host.
Suggested action: Any software that references system-specific functions uses this address to
connect to this system. In the examples discussed in this paper, the IP address is 140.110.240.60
and the name is CMS-HA1.
6. MSCS secondary system IP address and name
Function: To serve as the TCP/IP address and name of the specific Microsoft Windows server host.
Suggested action: Any software that references system-specific functions uses this address to connect
to this system. For the examples discussed in this paper, the IP address is 140.110.240.61 and the
name is CMS-HA2.
The “140.” network referenced above is the public network used by clients to access cluster services.
MSCS also requires that a private network be implemented for exchanging the cluster heartbeat.
The MSCS primary and secondary systems will also have static IP addresses on the private network.
In this paper, the “10.” network is used as the private network.
Cluster configuration
Figure 1 shows how to configure a cluster for enhanced performance once all components are
installed. With this configuration, load is distributed by designating that each cluster group works on
a separate system.
The purpose of the primary system is to run the HP SIM service and other Insight software
components.
The purpose of the secondary system is to run the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition
processes and to handle remote Microsoft SQL Server commands.
